Chapter 3 – The Man No One Recognized

The barber stared at the yellowed documents in disbelief.
The property deed listed one name.
William Carter.
The old man.
The same man everyone had mocked just minutes earlier.
Attached to the deed was a handwritten letter.
If you're reading this, it means you treated me with kindness before knowing who I was. That tells me everything I need to know about your character.
The barber's hands trembled.
The receptionist leaned closer.
"What is it?"
He silently handed her the papers.
Her face turned white.
William Carter wasn't homeless.
Forty years earlier, he had built the very salon they were standing in.
He had owned three successful salons across the city before losing everything after his wife died and a trusted business partner stole nearly all of his fortune through fraud.
Ashamed and broken, William disappeared from public life.
No one had recognized him.
Not even the employees working inside the building he once owned.
The letter continued.
The legal battle ended last week. The court returned this property to me. But I'm too old to start over.
Today I came looking for someone with skill.
Instead, I found someone with kindness.
Kindness is far more valuable.

At the bottom of the letter was one final sentence.
Tomorrow morning, please meet me at my attorney's office.
