Chapter 4 - The Bracelet That Revealed The First Lie

The Harrington mansion had always felt like a palace.

But that morning…

It felt like a courtroom.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Everyone was waiting for someone else to break.

Brooklyn stood beside the staircase, her face completely pale.

For the first time since I met her, she didn’t look confident.

She looked scared.

Real fear.

Not the fake tears she used when she wanted sympathy.

Not the dramatic expressions she used when she wanted attention.

This was different.

Because the past was finally catching up with her.

The front door opened.

Two police officers walked inside.

Behind them was a detective holding a small folder.

Callan immediately stepped forward.

“What is this about?”

The detective looked at him.

“Mr. Harrington, we need to speak with Brooklyn Harrington.”

Everyone became silent.

Brooklyn swallowed.

“Why?”

The detective opened the folder.

“We received new evidence regarding a stolen family heirloom.”

Melissa immediately stepped forward.

“There must be some mistake.”

The detective looked at her.

“Mrs. Harrington, we are not here because of a mistake.”

“We are here because someone provided evidence.”

My eyes moved toward the security monitor.

Nobody noticed.

But I smiled slightly.

Because I knew exactly where that evidence came from.

The camera.

The truth they thought they buried.

The detective looked at Brooklyn.

“On the night after the wedding, a bracelet belonging to Anastasia’s grandmother was reported missing.”

Brooklyn forced a laugh.

“This is ridiculous.”

“I already told everyone.”

“I never touched that bracelet.”

The detective stared at her.

“Are you sure about that?”

Brooklyn’s confidence disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

A tiny crack.

Callan noticed too.

“Brooklyn?”

She looked at him.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Nobody answered.

Because everyone was thinking the same thing.

The detective placed a photograph on the table.

A picture from the security footage.

Brooklyn walking through the hallway outside my bedroom.

Holding something small in her hand.

The room exploded with silence.

Melissa’s face changed.

Callan looked confused.

Brooklyn immediately stepped back.

“That proves nothing.”

The detective looked calm.

“It proves you were outside the bedroom.”

“So?”

“So you told us you never went near that room.”

Brooklyn froze.

I watched her carefully.

This was the moment.

The moment where the perfect daughter started falling apart.

Callan looked at his sister.

“Brooklyn…”

She immediately became angry.

“Are you seriously questioning me because of her?”

She pointed at me.

“After everything she has done?”

I almost laughed.

Even now.

Even with evidence in front of her.

She was still trying to make me the villain.

Melissa stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Her voice was sharp.

“This family does not need a public scene.”

The detective looked at her.

“Actually, Mrs. Harrington, this is already a serious matter.”

“If the bracelet was stolen, someone committed a crime.”

Melissa’s lips tightened.

Then she looked at me.

And I knew.

She was angry.

Not because Brooklyn might have stolen from me.

But because she had been exposed.

After the police left with a copy of the evidence, the house became unbearable.

Nobody wanted to look at Brooklyn.

Nobody wanted to admit what they had done.

Especially Callan.

He found me outside near the garden.

“Anastasia.”

I didn’t turn around.

“What?”

“I need to talk to you.”

I looked at him.

“About what?”

His eyes lowered.

“For everything.”

I waited.

I wanted to hear it.

I wanted him to finally admit he was wrong.

“I should not have…”

He stopped.

The words seemed impossible for him.

“I should not have hit you.”

I said nothing.

“I was angry.”

“That doesn’t excuse it.”

“I know.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You don’t.”

“You only know because you got caught.”

His face changed.

Because he knew I was right.

Then he whispered,

“What are you going to do with the video?”

I stared at him.

And there it was again.

His biggest concern.

Not my pain.

Not my fear.

The video.

“My question is…”

“Why are you more afraid of the truth coming out than what your family did to me?”

He had no answer.

Because there was no good answer.

That night, while everyone was asleep, I received a message from an unknown number.

A single photo was attached.

My blood turned cold.

It was a picture of the security camera.

But underneath it was a message.

A message that made me realize the Harrington family had secrets far darker than I imagined.

“Stop looking for answers.”

May you like

“Or you will lose more than your marriage.”
