Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE OF SECRETS

Detective Ortiz entered the farmhouse and placed a file on the table.
“Your father had a private account under a false name,” she said. “The money funded the Black Ledger for twenty years.”
Adrian opened the file.
Photographs showed his father meeting politicians, judges, and police commanders.
One photograph showed Evelyn beside him.
Another showed Daniel as a teenager.
A third showed Claire’s grandmother standing outside the blue-shuttered house.
Claire stared at it. “She knew.”
“She was one of the original couriers,” Ortiz said. “She helped move records when the network was threatened.”
Adrian looked toward the bedroom where Emma slept.
“Why would my father want the child?”
“Because bloodline access was built into the final account. Your daughter can unlock the system.”
Claire shook her head. “How?”
Ortiz pointed to the photograph. “The key is not enough. The heir must open the room.”
They returned to the old house before sunrise.
The blue shutters were damaged from the shooting. Broken glass covered the hallway.
The locked door waited at the end.
Claire stood before it, trembling.
Adrian placed the silver key in her hand.
“You don’t have to do this alone.”
She looked at him. “I was alone for seven years.”
“Not anymore.”
Claire inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a small room lined with shelves. Boxes filled every wall. Old photographs. Bank records. Microfilm. Tapes.
At the center sat a wooden cradle.
Emma’s cradle.
Claire covered her mouth.
Adrian found a hidden panel beneath the mattress.
Inside was a small recording device.
He pressed play.
His father’s voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this, my family has failed to protect the inheritance.”
Claire’s face went white.
The recording continued.
“The child of Adrian and Claire is the only person who can expose the true accounts. Evelyn will try to control her. Daniel will try to use her. Adrian will try to destroy everything.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Why would he record this?” Claire asked.
The voice continued.
“Adrian, you were never meant to rule the Ledger. You were meant to end it. But you will only succeed when you understand that the greatest betrayal came from the woman you trusted most.”
The recording stopped.
Everyone looked at Evelyn’s photograph.
Then Emma cried upstairs.
Claire ran from the room.
A window stood open.
Emma was gone.

On the floor lay a red coat button.
Cliffhanger: Evelyn had taken Emma from the locked room without making a sound.
