Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE OF ASHES

Adrian carried Emma through the burning hallway while Claire followed behind him.
Smoke blurred the exits.
“Left!” Daniel shouted through the fire alarm.
Adrian turned toward his brother’s voice.
Daniel appeared at the end of the corridor, wounded but standing.
“How did you get here?”
“Marcus woke up.”
“Where is he?”
“Getting everyone out.”
A beam crashed behind them.
Claire stumbled.
Adrian reached back and pulled her against his chest.
For one second, they were face-to-face in the smoke.
“I thought I lost you,” he said.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize now.”
“I never stopped loving you.”
The confession struck him harder than the heat.
Then Emma coughed.
They pushed through a side door and emerged into the rain.
The old hotel burned behind them.
Evelyn was gone.
The false child was safe with Adrian’s guards.
But the ledger had been destroyed.
Or so they thought.
At dawn, the survivors gathered at a farmhouse outside Bellhaven.
Daniel’s shoulder was stitched. Marcus lay unconscious in another room. Emma slept beside Claire on a narrow sofa.
Adrian stood by the window, watching smoke rise over the distant hills.
Daniel approached quietly.
“Evelyn escaped through the service tunnel.”
“I know.”
“She took the original key.”
Adrian turned. “What key?”
“The silver key Claire gave you.”
Adrian touched his pocket.
The key was gone.
Claire woke suddenly.
“Emma?”
“She’s here.”
Claire sat up, shaken. “I remembered something.”
Adrian knelt in front of her.
“What?”
“The locked room in my grandmother’s house. The things from before me weren’t just photographs.”
“What were they?”
“A memory box.”
“Why did you hide it?”
“I didn’t hide it. My grandmother did. She told me never to open it unless the Vale family came looking.”
Adrian’s expression hardened. “They came looking seven years ago.”
Claire nodded. “And they found me.”
Daniel entered the room holding a burned piece of paper.
He had recovered it from the hotel floor.
Only one sentence remained visible:
THE TRUE LEDGER IS NOT A BOOK.
Adrian looked at Claire.
She whispered, “It’s inside the house.”
A vehicle stopped outside.
Everyone reached for a weapon.
But the person who stepped from the car was a young woman in a police uniform.
She raised both hands.
“My name is Detective Lena Ortiz,” she said. “I know who ordered Claire’s murder.”
Adrian opened the door halfway.
“Who?”
Lena’s eyes moved to Emma.
May you like
“Your father.”
Cliffhanger: Adrian realized his father may have planned everything before his own death.
