Chapter 3: The Truth Behind The Engagement

The engagement party was no longer a celebration.

It had become a courtroom.

Except there was no judge.

Only truth.

Mateo stood in the center of the room, staring at the woman he was supposed to marry.

“Did you know about this?”

Valeria opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence answered everything.

Mateo stepped back.

“You knew.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Mateo, listen to me. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

“Like what?”

His voice cracked.

“Like you using me to get to my father’s land?”

The guests began whispering.

The same people who had judged Ramón minutes earlier were now watching Valeria.

Arturo stepped forward.

“Don’t be dramatic. We were creating an opportunity for everyone.”

Ramón looked at him.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

And somehow that made it stronger.

“You were creating an opportunity for yourselves.”

Arturo’s confidence disappeared.

“You think this old piece of land is more important than progress?”

Ramón looked toward the screen showing the property.

“No.”

He smiled sadly.

“I think people who destroy everything for money have forgotten what progress means.”

Nobody spoke.

Then something unexpected happened.

Mateo walked away from Valeria.

Not angrily.

Not dramatically.

Just quietly.

Like a man who had finally accepted a painful truth.

“I loved you.”

Valeria started crying.

“Mateo…”

“But I loved the person I thought you were.”

Those words hurt more than anger.

Because they were final.

Ramón watched his son.

And for the first time that night, he felt relief.

Not because he saved his land.

Because he saved his son from making the same mistake.

The next morning, the story spread throughout Querétaro.

The wealthy family who tried to steal a farmer’s land had been exposed.

Arturo’s company lost investors.

The development project collapsed.

Legal authorities began investigating the documents and financial agreements.

But Ramón refused revenge.

When reporters arrived at his property, expecting a man celebrating victory, they found something different.

They found him repairing a broken fence.

Just like always.

One reporter asked:

“Don Ramón, after everything they tried to do, why don’t you hate them?”

Ramón continued working.

Then he answered:

“Hate is another thing people steal from you.”

He looked at the walnut trees.

“My wife planted these trees because she believed something.”

The reporter waited.

May you like

Ramón smiled.

“Good things take time to grow.”
