Chapter 2: The Screen That Exposed Everything

The ballroom fell silent.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
The elegant music that had filled the room disappeared, replaced by the quiet hum of the giant screen behind the stage.
Everyone looked at the documents appearing before them.
Property maps.
Legal contracts.
Development plans.
And in the center of it all…
A red outline surrounding Ramón Cárdenas’ 32 hectares of land.
The land where his family had lived for generations.
The land where Teresa planted her trees.
The land that Arturo Montes planned to take.
Ramón did not look surprised.
That was what frightened Arturo the most.
The old man standing in the corner of the ballroom did not look like someone who had just discovered a betrayal.
He looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment.
Mateo stared at the screen, unable to understand what he was seeing.
Then he turned slowly toward Valeria.
“Valeria…”
His voice was barely audible.
“What is this?”
For the first time that night, her perfect expression broke.
Only for a second.
But Ramón noticed.
He had spent his entire life reading machines. Understanding small sounds. Detecting problems before they became disasters.
People were no different.
A fake smile.
A nervous glance.
A hand that moved too quickly.
Those were signs too.
Arturo immediately stepped forward.
“Everyone, please remain calm. This is simply a business proposal.”
A few guests nodded.
They wanted to believe him.
Rich people often trusted expensive suits more than honest faces.
Ramón slowly walked toward the screen.
The room watched.
The man they had called a gardener was now standing in front of a plan worth millions.
Arturo smiled.
“Don Ramón, you misunderstand. We were trying to help you. That land is becoming extremely valuable. Someone like you shouldn’t have to worry about managing something so complicated.”
Someone like you.
The words hit harder than an insult.
They revealed everything.
Ramón looked directly at him.
“Someone like me?”
Arturo adjusted his jacket.
“You are a hardworking man. But business requires experience.”
Ramón looked around the ballroom.
At the wealthy guests.
At the people who had judged him.
Then he looked at his son.
Mateo’s face was filled with disappointment.
Not because of his father.
Because of the people standing beside him.
Ramón reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small folder.
The ballroom became completely still.
“I brought something tonight.”
He placed the folder on the table.
Arturo’s expression changed.
“What is that?”
Ramón opened it slowly.
Inside were decades-old documents.
Original property records.
Signed agreements.
Historical land registrations.
And one document that made Arturo’s face lose its color.
A legal protection agreement preventing the land from being sold without approval from every direct family heir.
Mateo looked at the papers.
“Dad… when did you do this?”
Ramón looked at his son.
“After your mother died.”
He paused.
“She told me something before she left.”
Everyone waited.
“She said, ‘Ramón, protect the home, but never let protecting the home destroy the family.’”
His voice remained calm.
“But I never imagined I would have to protect it from family.”
Valeria’s eyes filled with fear.
May you like
Because she understood.
The plan was falling apart.
