THE FIRST ONE WAS YOU / Chapter 2 / 20

Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE

The door opened slowly.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for darkness to enter the room.

I aimed my Glock at the gap.

My finger stayed away from the trigger.

Every movement mattered.

Every breath mattered.

The hallway was empty.

I waited.

Ten seconds.

Twenty seconds.

Nothing.

Then I saw it.

A small piece of paper on the floor outside my bedroom.

I stepped closer.

I kept my weapon raised.

The paper had my name written on it.

Detective James Miller.

Underneath was a date.

The day Elias Voss was sentenced to death.

My stomach tightened.

I picked it up.

The message was written in the same handwriting as the ceiling.

“You never finished the investigation.”

I stared at the words.

Because that was impossible.

The Voss case was considered one of the biggest victories of my career.

The evidence was perfect.

The witnesses were perfect.

The confession was recorded.

The jury convicted him.

The state executed him.

But criminals do not come back from the dead.

They don’t send messages.

They don’t leave footprints.

I moved through the apartment.

Every room was empty.

The front door was locked.

The balcony door was locked.

No signs of forced entry.

Except the bedroom window.

Someone had been inside.

Someone had wanted me to know.

When I returned to the bedroom, I noticed something I had missed.

A small object sitting on my desk.

An old photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed a crime scene.

Lakeview.

The first murder.

The one that started everything.

On the back of the photo were six words.

“You chose the wrong victim.”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

No one spoke.

Only breathing.

Slow.

Controlled.

Then a voice whispered.

“You remember the first one, don’t you?”

My blood froze.

Because I recognized the voice.

Not from a recording.

Not from memory.

From the courtroom.

Elias Voss.

I gripped the phone.

“That’s impossible.”

A quiet laugh came through the speaker.

“You said that three years ago too.”

I looked around my apartment.

“Who are you?”

The voice stayed calm.

“You spent three years believing you caught a monster.”

A pause.

“But you never asked who created him.”

The call ended.

I stood completely still.

Then my police instincts returned.

I grabbed my laptop.

I searched the old Voss case files.

Everything was exactly where it should be.

Except one file.

The original evidence report.

Missing.

I checked again.

Nothing.

Someone had removed it.

Someone with access.

Someone inside the department.

Then my screen changed.

A new file appeared.

A video.

Created five minutes ago.

The title:

THE NIGHT YOU LIED.

I pressed play.

The screen went black.

Then a camera angle appeared.

A security video.

From the night of Elias Voss’s arrest.

I watched myself entering the interrogation room.

But there was something wrong.

Something I had never seen before.

Someone else was already inside.

Someone sitting across from Elias.

Someone I recognized.

My own police captain.

Captain Robert Hayes.

And the worst part?

The video showed him whispering something before I entered.

May you like

Something that changed everything.

“He doesn’t know he was chosen.”
