Chapter 19 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE FIRST ONE

The room filled with footsteps.

Dozens.

Maybe more.

The activated subjects surrounded us.

People who had lived normal lives.

People who had hidden in plain sight.

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew this would happen.”

“Yes.”

“You planned this.”

“Yes.”

I hated that he admitted it so easily.

No excuses.

No lies.

Just confidence.

“You’re all the same.”

Adrian smiled slightly.

“No.”

He looked at Elias, who had entered behind the others.

“That’s what makes this interesting.”

Elias stood beside me.

For once, there was no hatred between us.

Only understanding.

We were both prisoners.

Different cells.

Same prison.

Victor Kane appeared on a nearby screen.

“Adrian.”

The room became silent.

Adrian looked at him.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

Victor answered:

“You should have stayed obedient.”

I looked between them.

“You two created this.”

Victor shook his head.

“No.”

His eyes moved toward me.

“You did.”

I felt anger rise.

“Stop saying that.”

Victor’s voice became softer.

“When you were eighteen, you asked us to create a system that could stop criminals before they acted.”

I froze.

“You believed you could prevent tragedy.”

A pause.

“But you didn’t understand the cost.”

My father’s words returned.

You asked to forget.

I looked at Adrian.

“You knew all along.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted to see if you would become like us.”

I looked around.

At the subjects.

At Elias.

At Adrian.

At myself.

Then I understood.

The test was never about intelligence.

Never about strength.

It was about choice.

Would I become the thing they created?

Or would I destroy it?

I stepped forward.

“You made one mistake.”

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

“You studied criminals.”

I looked at Victor.

“You studied fear.”

Then I looked at Elias.

“But you never studied forgiveness.”

Elias looked surprised.

I continued.

“You created monsters because you believed people were predictable.”

“But you were wrong.”

The subjects began moving.

Adrian watched.

Waiting.

I reached into my jacket.

Not for my gun.

For the original Project Mirror files.

The ones my father hid.

The evidence.

The truth.

“I’m releasing everything.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You wouldn’t.”

“I would.”

Because that was the one thing they never considered.

Truth didn’t need permission.

It only needed someone brave enough to reveal it.

The building shook.

The lights flashed.

Then every screen in the city activated.

The files began uploading.

Project Mirror.

Every name.

Every secret.

Every crime.

The world was finally seeing everything.

Adrian looked at me.

“You think this ends here?”

I stared back.

“No.”

A pause.

“But it starts here.”

The screen showed one final file.

A file nobody had seen.

A file with my father’s name.

And one message.

“He was never missing.”

“He was hiding from the person who started everything.”

The screen revealed the final name.

And I stopped breathing.

Because the person behind Project Mirror…

Was not Victor Kane.

Not Adrian Vale.

May you like

Not anyone I expected.

It was someone who had been beside me my entire life.
