Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT SHE CAME

Ruth recognized the photograph immediately.

“Your dad took that the day Patricia came to our house,” she said. “It was late. You were away at college.”

“What did she want?”

“He told me it was company business. After she left, he went back to the workshop and stayed there until morning.”

Ruth opened a kitchen drawer and brought out an old calendar. She had kept it because her husband had written notes in the margins during his last year of work.

Beside the date of Patricia’s visit was one word in red ink: RECORDING.

Sofia asked if Ruth remembered a device.

“He had a little digital recorder. Carried it to job sites when he needed to remember instructions.”

Emma remembered it too. Her father had let her speak into it as a child, then played back her voice until she laughed so hard she couldn’t stand.

“Where is it?” she asked.

Ruth shook her head. “After he got sick, I packed his tools in the garage.”

They searched the garage together. Dust coated the boxes. Ruth found the recorder in a canvas tool bag beneath a pair of work gloves. The batteries had corroded, but Sofia knew a technician who could recover the memory.

Two hours later, they sat around a laptop and listened.

First came the scrape of a chair. Then Patricia’s unmistakable voice.

“You signed off on the invoices, Thomas.”

“I signed for the work my crew did,” Emma’s father said. “You added addresses after I sent them in.”

“You can’t prove that.”

“I kept copies.”

There was a long silence.

Patricia spoke again. “Walk away from the company. I’ll take care of the debts. Your family won’t have to hear about any of this.”

“My family knows who I am.”

“Then protect them. Because if you force this into court, I’ll make sure your name is on every fake bill.”

The recording ended with a door closing.

Emma sat motionless. For five years, she had carried the idea that her father had failed and been too proud to tell her. Now she heard his voice standing up for himself.

Sofia saved copies and contacted the investigator assigned to Nathan’s messages.

That night, a story appeared on a local news site. The headline claimed Emma had abandoned her wedding for Dante Moretti and was now trying to take control of the Whitmore family’s property deal.

The article included a photograph of Dante placing his coat around her shoulders.

“Patricia,” Emma said.

Sofia skimmed it. “Most likely.”

Emma’s phone began filling with messages. Some were from friends asking whether she was safe. Others came from strangers calling her a liar.

Then a message arrived from Nathan.

YOU’VE GOT DAD’S RECORDING. I HAVE THE PART HE CUT OFF.
