Chapter 9 - A Child in Front of a Camera —

Beatriz called Ricardo three times.
He answered on the fourth.
“Bring him home.”
“He wants to defend himself.”
“He’s ten.”
“You didn’t seem worried about his age when you went behind my back.”
Beatriz stood so abruptly that her chair scraped the floor.
“Don’t put him on camera.”
“We’re recording a simple statement.”
“What statement?”
Ricardo ended the call.
At the studio, Enzo sat on a stool that was slightly too high. His shoes swung above the floor.
A woman holding a clipboard crouched in front of him.
“Just remember what we practiced.”
He looked toward his father.
Ricardo nodded.
“You didn’t mean to spill it,” the woman said. “You got scared when she shouted. You’re sorry people misunderstood.”
Enzo rubbed his palms against his pants.
“What if I say it wrong?”
“You won’t,” Ricardo said.
The red light came on.
Enzo looked into the lens.
“I’m sorry about what happened at the restaurant. I moved my hand, and the bowl—”
He stopped.
The woman smiled too brightly.
“That’s okay. Start again.”
Enzo glanced at his father.
“I thought I wasn’t supposed to say I moved it.”
Ricardo’s expression tightened.
“Cut.”
Across town, Marina sat beside Ana while Beatriz paced the café sidewalk.
“I don’t want his face posted everywhere,” Marina said.
Ana nodded.
“We can make that clear.”
“I want them to stop lying about me. That’s different.”
Helena had asked Marina’s permission to share her recording. Marina gave it, with one condition: Enzo’s face would be blurred and his voice altered.
The adults could answer for their own words.
By late afternoon, Helena’s video was circulating beside the edited security clip.
People began noticing what the company’s version left out.
Roberto’s order.
Ricardo’s money.
Marina’s bandaged arm.
Then an employee at Ricardo’s company forwarded the statements to a board member.
Ricardo had built a profitable business by selling reliability to other businesses. His partners weren’t frightened by an injured waitress.
They were frightened by records showing he might be lying while using the company’s name.
His phone began ringing.
He ignored the first two calls.
The third came from the restaurant’s owner, Sofia Mendes.

She had returned to São Paulo early.
“I’m standing in my office,” she said. “Why is my manager telling me that you have my security footage?”
