Chapter 11 - The Cost of Telling the Truth —

For two days, Marina barely slept.
Every knock at the apartment door made her stomach tighten.
She hated that Ricardo had accomplished that without ever coming near her home.
Lucas began checking the street before leaving for school. Teresa pretended not to notice. Their apartment, once too small for all their noise, had become painfully quiet.
“I can quit the bakery shifts and get more hours somewhere else,” Lucas said.
“No.”
“Marina—”
“You’re finishing school.”
“You can’t decide everything.”
“No,” she said. “But I can refuse to let this take that too.”
He looked away.
Later, she found his worn backpack beside the washing machine. He had repaired the zipper with a bent paper clip.
She sat on the bathroom floor and cried again.
At Ana’s office the next morning, she asked the question she had been avoiding.
“What if I just stop?”
Ana put down her pen.
“You’re allowed to be tired.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
“I know.”
Marina stared at the wall.
“I want my old life back.”
Ana’s voice softened.
“Then we make decisions based on your life. Not on proving you can take unlimited punishment.”
They discussed what Marina wanted.
Her name cleared.
Her lost pay addressed.
Her treatment paid for.
No statement saying she had burned herself.
No forced meeting with the boy.
Saying it plainly helped.
Meanwhile, Beatriz took Enzo to stay with her sister.
Ricardo stood in the foyer as she carried down a small suitcase.
“You’re taking my son because of a waitress?”
Beatriz stopped on the last step.
“I’m taking our son because you keep using him to defend yourself.”
Enzo stood behind her clutching his game console.
“Are you getting divorced?”
Neither adult answered quickly enough.
His face crumpled.
“It was just soup.”
Beatriz set down the suitcase.
“No, honey. It was a person.”
Ricardo reached for the bag.
She held on.
For several seconds, husband and wife stood gripping the same handle.
Then Ricardo let go.
That evening, Sofia’s technician recovered the full security export from the recorder and compared its timing with the edited clip.
Ana received a secure copy.
She called Marina immediately.
“The recording is clear.”

Marina closed her eyes.
Then Ana added, “There’s something else. It shows what Roberto did after you left.”
