Carlos froze.
"No..."
He stared at Elena's hand.
Had he imagined it?
The nurse hurried over.
"Did she just move?"
Carlos couldn't answer.
Another twitch.
This time everyone saw it.
The nurse immediately called for the attending physician.
Within seconds the quiet ICU room exploded with activity.
Doctors checked her pupils.
Another examined her reflexes.
One adjusted the ventilator.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody wanted to give Carlos false hope.
Then Elena squeezed Mateo's finger.
Only for a second.
But it was real.
Carlos burst into tears.
The neurologist remained cautious.
"This could still be a reflex."
Mateo shook his head.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"Mom squeezed back."
No doctor answered.
Because none of them could explain what they had just witnessed.
As the medical team worked around the bed, Carlos stepped back and noticed something strange.
