Chapter 12 - BLOOD DOESN’T MAKE A FATHER

Daniel hit the concrete first.
Claire saw it on the monitor.
“NO!”
She ran out of the command van before Ramirez could stop her.
Officers stormed the warehouse.
More shouting.
“DROP THE WEAPON!”
“ON THE GROUND!”
“SHOW ME YOUR HANDS!”
Claire ran through the rain.
Inside, Travis lay facedown with three officers over him.
The gun had skidded across the floor.
Daniel was on his knees.
Alive.
Claire almost collapsed.
“Lily!”
Her daughter was crying in the arms of a tactical officer.
“Mommy!”
Claire grabbed her.
She checked Lily’s face.
Her arms.
Her chest.
“You’re okay?”
Lily nodded frantically.
“Ryan?”
Claire turned.
Ryan sat against a wall.
Blood covered his left sleeve.
Her heart stopped.
The bullet had grazed his upper arm.
Not life-threatening.
But painful.
Daniel knelt beside him.
Ryan’s teeth chattered.
“Did he get Lily?”
“She’s safe.”
Ryan looked across the warehouse.
Lily was wrapped around Claire.
He let out a shaky breath.
“Good.”
Daniel stared at him.
Then, very carefully, he touched the boy’s hair.
Ryan didn’t pull away.
Paramedics took both children to the hospital.
Travis Cole was arrested.
By sunrise, investigators had enough evidence to charge him with kidnapping, child endangerment, assault, weapons offenses, and a list that kept growing.
The investigation into Megan’s death was reopened.
Traffic data later showed Travis had followed her for nearly forty miles.
A damaged section of his SUV matched marks found on the rear of Megan’s car.
He had bumped her vehicle on the wet road.
She lost control.
He never called 911.
Megan had died alone.
Ryan learned the truth three days later.
He didn’t speak for hours.
Then he asked Daniel:
“Why does everybody who says they love me lie?”
Daniel had no answer.
One week later, the DNA results arrived.
99.998 percent probability.
Daniel Bennett was Ryan Cole’s biological father.
Claire stared at the paper.
She had known.
They all had.
But seeing it in print made everything permanent.
Daniel sat across from her at the kitchen table.
Lily was staying with Claire’s sister for the afternoon.
Ryan remained in temporary foster care.
“What happens now?” Daniel asked.
Claire folded the report.
“You’re his father.”
“I know.”
“You need to be in his life.”
Daniel watched her carefully.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying what I’m not saying.”
“Claire.”
She looked at him.
“I am not telling you to abandon him.”
His shoulders relaxed slightly.
“But I’m also not pretending I know how to bring the boy who hit Lily into this house.”
Daniel nodded.
“I understand.”
“No, I don’t think you do.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I look at Ryan and see a child who was abused and manipulated.”
She swallowed.
“And then I look at Lily’s scar.”
Daniel looked down.
“I can’t make those two things fit yet.”
“You don’t have to.”
“What about us?”
That question hurt more than she expected.
Claire looked at her wedding ring.
“I don’t know.”
Daniel’s face crumpled.
She continued.
“Maybe if you had told me about Megan eleven years ago, we could’ve survived it.”
“We can survive this.”
“Maybe.”
“Claire—”
“But you didn’t tell me.”
Daniel went quiet.
“You taught me that when truth is inconvenient, you hide it.”
“That’s not who I am anymore.”
Claire took off her ring.
Daniel stopped breathing.
May you like
She placed it on the table.
“Then prove it.”
