Chapter 3 â The Woman Nobody Suspected

The next morning, the Romano mansion looked different.
Same walls.
Same expensive furniture.
Same guards standing outside.
But the feeling had changed.
Nobody trusted anyone.
Because the enemy wasnât outside.
The enemy was already inside.
Marcus spent the entire night reviewing security footage.
At 7:30 a.m., he called me into the office.
âI found something.â
On the screen was a recording from the mansion hallway.
A figure entered Alexanderâs private medical room at 1:12 a.m.
The person wore a black coat.
A hood covered their face.
But their hands were visible.
A gold bracelet.
My heart stopped.
I knew that bracelet.
âWho is that?â Marcus asked.
I didnât answer.
Because I couldnât.
âNo,â I whispered.
Marcus looked at me.
âYou recognize her.â
I swallowed.
âItâs Elena.â
Alexanderâs fiancĂ©e.
The woman everyone believed would become the queen of the Romano family.
Marcus remained silent.
âAre you sure?â
I nodded slowly.
âShe gave me that bracelet last month.â
Marcus replayed the footage.
Elena entered the room.
Three minutes laterâŠ
she left.
Carrying nothing.
But Alexanderâs medication had been changed.
Marcus stood.
âWhy would she do this?â
I didnât know.
But then I remembered something.
Two days earlier.
I had walked past Elenaâs office.
I heard her arguing with someone.
âYou promised me the company after the wedding.â
A man answered.
âYou only get everything if Alexander doesnât survive.â
My blood turned cold.
âMarcusâŠâ
He looked at me.
âThereâs more.â
I told him everything.
The argument.
The voice.
The conversation.
Marcus immediately grabbed his phone.
But before he could call anyoneâŠ
the mansion lights went out.
Complete darkness.
A second laterâ
A gunshot echoed through the house.
We ran toward Alexanderâs room.
The guards were already moving.
When we enteredâŠ
Alexander was sitting upright.
A broken window behind him.
A bullet hole in the wall.
Someone had tried to finish the job.
But Alexander wasnât the target.
The bullet had missed him.
Because someone had pushed him.
I looked down.
Nina.
No.
Not Nina.
Me.
I had pushed him without thinking.
The room went silent.
Alexander looked at me.
For the first time, his eyes were completely clear.
âYou saved my life.â
I didnât know what to say.
Because I had spent months believing Alexander Romano was a monster.
But lying thereâŠ
looking at me like I matteredâŠ
I realized the most dangerous man in the city was also the most alone.
Then Marcus received a message.
His face changed.
âElena left the mansion.â
Alexanderâs expression hardened.
âFind her.â
Marcus hesitated.
âAlexanderâŠâ
May you like
âWhat?â
âShe wasnât working alone.â
