Chapter 13 - THE ROOM FULL OF SECRETS

The storage facility sat beneath a Kensington-owned hotel near the river.
No public records showed the basement level existed.
Victoria provided an access code.
Mateo provided the rest.
By noon, Leo and Mateo were inside.
Beatrice stayed at the hospital with Lily.
This time, she did not argue.
Lily needed her.
Leo needed answers.
The hidden basement contained no gold.
No weapons.
No dramatic treasure.
It contained filing cabinets.
Hundreds of them.
Arthur Kensington’s real fortune was information.
Photographs of politicians.
Bank records.
Affair evidence.
Payoffs.
Medical files.
Judges.
Executives.
Police officers.
People Arthur had controlled for thirty years.
Mateo stared around.
“He could own half the city with this.”
Leo answered.
“He probably does.”
They found Sofia’s file in cabinet S-14.
Inside were surveillance photographs.
A copy of the envelope Victoria handed Sofia.
A map of the bombing site.
Payments to Graham Voss.
And a hospital intake form.
Leo stared at the patient name.
JANE DOE.
Female.
Thirty-two.
Severe burns and internal injuries.
Time admitted.
8:47 p.m.
Sofia had been declared dead publicly at 8:12.
Leo’s hands began shaking.
Mateo read further.
“Transferred at 11:03.”
“To where?”
The destination line had been blacked out.
Leo turned the paper toward the light.
Nothing.
Mateo opened another folder.
“Leo.”
Inside was a photograph.
Sofia on a hospital bed.
Alive.
Bandaged.
Eyes open.
Timestamp.
10:16 p.m.
Almost two hours after Leo had been told she was dead.
Leo sat down.
He could not speak.
Mateo had known him since they were teenagers.
He had seen Leo shot.
Arrested.
Betrayed.
He had never seen him look like this.
“Brother.”
Leo covered his mouth.
“She was alive.”
“Yes.”
“And I was home holding Lily.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I was planning her funeral.”
Mateo said nothing.
Leo looked at the photograph.
“She was alive.”
His voice broke.
For a long moment, he was not Leo Rossi.
He was simply a husband.
Then he stood.
“Find Voss.”
Mateo nodded.
Before they left, they found Lily’s file.
It contained therapy notes.
Medical records.
And a draft petition.
EMERGENCY CUSTODY TRANSFER.
Petitioner.
Victoria Kensington.
Beatrice Miller listed as a destabilizing third party.
Leo stared.
Mateo read the supporting claim.
“Father engaged in criminal activity.”
“Primary caretaker emotionally dependent on household employee.”
“Child psychologically unstable.”
Leo understood.
Victoria had never simply wanted Beatrice gone.
She wanted Leo declared unfit.
Lily removed from his custody.
And herself installed as guardian.
Mateo found a later version.
This one included Arthur Kensington as trustee over Lily’s inheritance.
Mateo laughed coldly.
“There it is.”
“Money?”
“Control.”
Leo nodded.
“My assets pass partly to Lily if I die.”
“And if you lose custody?”
“Her trust remains inaccessible to me.”
Mateo closed the file.
“They planned to take your daughter and weaken you at the same time.”
Leo’s phone rang.
Beatrice.
He answered instantly.
“Is Lily okay?”
“Yes.”
Her voice sounded strange.
“What happened?”
“There’s a man here.”
Leo stood.
“What man?”
“He says his name is Graham Voss.”
Mateo froze.
Leo’s voice hardened.
“Get away from him.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
Beatrice looked across Lily’s hospital room.
An older gray-haired man stood with both hands visible.
Security guards surrounded him.
He carried no weapon.
He looked exhausted.
“Because he surrendered.”
Leo said nothing.
Beatrice continued.
“And he says Sofia Rossi didn’t die at the clinic.”
Leo gripped the phone.
“What did he say?”
Beatrice looked at Voss.
May you like
Then answered.
“He says he helped her escape.”
