Chapter 8 - THE WRONG MAN DIED

Thomas Donovan had drunk from the wrong glass.

That was Harold’s claim.

The sedative had been intended for Charles.

Not Thomas.

Claire struggled to understand.

“Why kill Charles?”

Harold’s breathing became frantic.

“Because he was going to expose everything.”

“Who put the drug in the glass?”

“I didn’t see.”

“You were there.”

“I left before dinner ended.”

“Evelyn?”

Silence.

“Harold.”

“I can’t say.”

“You can.”

“No.”

A noise sounded behind him.

Harold whispered.

“He found me.”

The call ended.

Police traced the signal to an abandoned warehouse near the airport.

They found Harold’s phone.

Blood on the floor.

No Harold.

No Richard.

The case exploded publicly the next morning.

Financial crimes.

Corporate fraud.

Possible murder.

News vans surrounded Harrington Maritime.

Evelyn refused to leave her mansion.

Preston went there alone.

His mother stood beside the fireplace.

“You betrayed me.”

“No.”

Preston closed the door.

“I stopped protecting you.”

“You gave Claire our records.”

“I gave investigators evidence.”

“You are a Harrington.”

“I’m also a human being.”

Evelyn laughed bitterly.

“You sound like your father.”

“I hope so.”

She slapped him.

Preston’s head turned.

For a moment neither moved.

Evelyn’s hand trembled.

Preston slowly looked back at her.

He didn’t raise his hand.

He didn’t shout.

He simply said:

“That’s the last time you ever hit me.”

Something in Evelyn’s face broke.

“You would choose Claire over your own mother?”

“This isn’t about Claire.”

“Everything is about Claire!”

“No.”

Preston stepped closer.

“This is about what you did.”

Evelyn looked suddenly old.

“I saved this family.”

“From what?”

“Poverty?”

Preston laughed.

“We had millions.”

“Not for long.”

“What happened?”

Evelyn sat.

And finally told him.

Charles had discovered Richard’s embezzlement.

But Richard had evidence Evelyn had approved some transfers.

She had believed they were legal tax shelters.

By the time she understood, her signature was everywhere.

Richard threatened her.

Thomas discovered the scheme.

Charles planned to report it.

Evelyn panicked.

“I told Richard to stop Charles.”

Preston stared at her.

“How?”

“I didn’t ask.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s the only one I have.”

“Did you know someone was going to poison him?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“No!”

Her voice cracked.

“I swear.”

“Then Thomas drank it.”

Evelyn covered her face.

“Yes.”

“And you covered up his death.”

“I was terrified.”

“You paid Keller.”

“Yes.”

“You stole Claire’s shares.”

“I needed control of the company.”

Preston stepped backward.

“You built my entire life on a dead man.”

Evelyn began crying.

“I built your life because I loved you.”

Preston shook his head.

“Love doesn’t make this clean.”

Outside, tires screeched.

Black SUVs surrounded the mansion.

Federal agents entered.

Evelyn stood.

“What’s happening?”

Preston looked through the window.

Agents approached the front door.

“I think tomorrow came.”

The doorbell rang.

Evelyn stared at her son.

And for the first time since the ballroom confrontation, she understood Claire’s warning.

Tomorrow you’ll be begging for my forgiveness.

But when agents entered, they weren’t there to arrest Evelyn.

They were there to protect her.

Because Richard Vale had sent a message.

May you like

And the message contained only six words:

EVELYN TALKS, PRESTON DIES BEFORE MIDNIGHT.
