Chapter 7 - THE SON WHO FINALLY LOOKED

The payment was for $250,000.

Evelyn had transferred it to a private medical consultant named Dr. Martin Keller.

Keller had signed Thomas Donovan’s original death certificate.

Claire felt the last piece begin to move into place.

Police found Keller living in Arizona.

He refused to talk.

Then investigators showed him the tapes.

His resistance collapsed.

“I didn’t kill Thomas.”

“Who did?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire watched through the interrogation-room glass.

Keller wiped sweat from his forehead.

“Evelyn paid me to change the report.”

“Why?”

“She said the real toxicology result would create a scandal.”

“What was the real result?”

“A sedative.”

“Which one?”

Keller answered.

The drug was rare.

Hospital-controlled.

And Charles Harrington had been receiving it during cancer treatment.

Someone had taken medication intended for Charles.

Then used it on Thomas.

Claire closed her eyes.

The circle had become painfully small.

Evelyn.

Richard.

Harold.

Charles.

One of them had access.

One of them had motive.

Maybe more than one.

That evening, Preston arrived at Claire’s office.

She nearly refused to see him.

Then she changed her mind.

His cheek still carried the fading mark from her slap.

He looked exhausted.

“I owe you an apology.”

Claire continued reading.

“For which part?”

“All of it.”

“That could take a while.”

“I deserved that.”

Claire looked up.

“No.”

Preston frowned.

“You deserved consequences.”

She closed the file.

“Don’t confuse accountability with humiliation.”

He nodded slowly.

“I grabbed you.”

“Yes.”

“I raised my hand.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

Claire studied him.

This time there was no excuse attached.

No “but.”

No defense of his mother.

“Accepted.”

Preston looked surprised.

“That easy?”

“Apologies are easy.”

Claire leaned back.

“What you do afterward is harder.”

He placed another folder on her desk.

“What’s this?”

“My resignation.”

Claire stared.

“From Harrington Maritime?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I don’t know what parts of that company are legitimate anymore.”

Claire opened the folder.

Preston had also waived his executive severance.

Nearly twelve million dollars.

“You’re giving this up?”

“It was never really mine.”

Claire looked at him differently.

Before she could respond, Maya called.

Harold Price had disappeared.

His house was empty.

His passport was gone.

And security footage showed him entering O’Hare Airport.

Police rushed there.

Too late.

Harold’s flight had departed.

Destination:

Toronto.

But Harold never arrived.

His seat had been empty when the plane landed.

Claire stared at Maya.

“How?”

“He boarded.”

“We have footage.”

“Then where did he go?”

Maya placed another image on the table.

Airport footage showed Harold entering the jet bridge.

Behind him walked a man wearing a baseball cap.

The man had a scar beside his left ear.

Richard Vale.

Claire looked up.

“Richard was in custody.”

Maya nodded.

“He was released on bail two hours earlier.”

Preston swore.

Then Claire’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Harold whispered:

“Claire.”

“Where are you?”

“You need to listen.”

Noise exploded in the background.

A door slammed.

Harold breathed heavily.

“Your father’s death wasn’t the original plan.”

“What are you talking about?”

“They weren’t trying to kill Thomas.”

Claire froze.

“Who were they trying to kill?”

May you like

Harold whispered the answer.

“Charles.”
