Chapter 14 - THE HOUSE LEARNS TO BREATHE

Six months changed the Vale mansion.
The north wing was demolished.
Not renovated.
Demolished.
Dominic watched the walls come down himself.
The restrained bed was destroyed.
The medicine cabinets were handed to investigators.
Every camera Margaret had secretly controlled was removed.
Sunlight entered spaces that had been dark for years.
Evelyn returned slowly.
She had nightmares.
So did Noah.
Sometimes Noah still screamed.
Sometimes he hid.
But now, when someone touched him, they asked first.
“Can I hug you?”
“Can I pick you up?”
“Can I sit beside you?”
Choice changed him.
He began talking more.
One word became five.
Five became sentences.
One morning Clara found him at breakfast arguing with Dominic over pancakes.
“I said chocolate.”
“You ate chocolate yesterday.”
“I’m four.”
“That isn’t a legal argument.”
“It is to me.”
Clara laughed so hard she nearly dropped the coffee.
Dominic looked at her.
“What?”
“You negotiate billion-dollar deals and lose arguments to preschoolers.”
Noah raised both hands.
“I win.”
“Yes,” Dominic said.
“You usually do.”
Tyler’s surgery succeeded.
Helen moved into a comfortable home twenty minutes away.
Clara used part of her inheritance to start a foundation for families dealing with childhood medical debt.
She refused Dominic’s offer to name it after the Vales.
She called it Second Chance.
Evelyn joined the board.
One evening, Clara stood outside the mansion watching Noah chase bubbles across the lawn.
Evelyn joined her.
“He loves you.”
“I love him.”
Evelyn smiled.
“I know.”
Clara looked uncomfortable.
“I never wanted to replace you.”
“You didn’t.”
Evelyn looked toward her son.
“You kept a part of him alive until I could come back.”
Clara swallowed.
“That means more than you know.”
Behind them Dominic stepped outside.
“Noah.”
The boy turned.
“Bedtime.”
“No.”
Dominic crossed his arms.
Clara laughed.
“That word again.”
Noah grinned.
This “no” sounded different.
Not terrified.
Not desperate.
Just four years old.
Then a black sedan stopped beyond the front gate.
Dominic’s smile disappeared.
No visitor was scheduled.
One of the guards approached the vehicle.
A man stepped out.
Older.
Gray-haired.
Holding an envelope.
Dominic walked toward him.
“Who are you?”
The stranger looked at Evelyn.
Then Clara.
Then Noah.
“My name is Samuel Grant.”
Dominic waited.
Samuel held out the envelope.
“Margaret Hargrove hired me twenty years ago.”
Everyone froze.
“To do what?”
Samuel looked at Clara.
May you like
“To kill Anthony Vale.”
Clara stopped breathing.
