Chapter 9: The Choice Victoria Made

Chapter 9: The Choice Victoria Made
Caroline entered the warehouse with two men.
“You were told to retrieve the files,” she said to Victoria.
“They were not in Rosa’s apartment.”
“Then persuade her to reveal where they are.”
“She doesn’t know.”
Caroline looked at Rosa.
“Everyone knows something.”
Rosa stared back.
“Ethan found them.”
For the first time, Caroline lost control.
“What?”
“The files are with federal investigators.”
Caroline turned toward Victoria.
“You failed.”
Victoria’s face crumpled.
“I did what you asked.”
“You have never done anything properly.”
“You arranged my entire life!”
“And you benefited from it.”
“You told me Ethan would love me.”
“I told you he would marry you.”
The difference broke something inside Victoria.
Caroline approached Rosa.
“You believe Ethan will protect you now?”
“Yes.”
“His father believed the same about himself.”
Caroline removed a pistol from her handbag.
Victoria stepped backward.
“Mother.”
“This ends tonight.”
Lily began pounding on the office door.
“Mama!”
Rosa struggled against the rope.
“Do not point that near my child.”
Caroline’s voice remained calm.
“Your child should never have existed.”
Victoria stared at her mother.
Those words seemed to echo through every year of her own childhood.
Every mistake corrected.
Every emotion mocked.
Every achievement treated as insufficient.
She stepped between Caroline and Rosa.
“No.”
Caroline’s expression hardened.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Victoria.”
“You said no one would be hurt.”
“I said what you needed to hear.”
The warehouse door crashed open.
Ethan entered with federal agents behind him.
Caroline grabbed Victoria and pressed the gun against her side.
“Everyone stay back.”
Ethan saw Rosa tied to the chair.
“Where is Lily?”
“In the office,” Rosa said.
An agent moved toward it.
One of Caroline’s men raised his weapon.
A shot struck the ceiling.
Lily screamed.
Ethan lunged behind a steel column.
Caroline dragged Victoria toward the rear exit.
“You ruined everything,” she hissed into her daughter’s ear.
Victoria looked across the warehouse at Ethan.
For years, she had believed becoming Mrs. Caldwell would finally make her important.
Now his face held no love for her.
Only horror.
She understood that the wedding had not been destroyed by Lily’s eyes.
It had been destroyed long before that—by every cruel choice Victoria had made to protect a future built on lies.
She drove her heel down onto Caroline’s foot.
Caroline cried out.
Victoria twisted away.
The gun fired.
Victoria fell.
Federal agents rushed forward and tackled Caroline.
Ethan reached the office and tore open the door.
Lily ran into his arms.
“Piano man!”
He held her tightly.
“My name is Ethan.”
She buried her face against his neck.
“Mama says you’re my daddy.”
Ethan stopped.
Rosa watched from across the warehouse, tears streaming down her face.
Lily pulled back.
“Are you?”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
The word shook.
“Yes, Lily. I’m your daddy.”
Behind them, Victoria lay bleeding on the concrete.
She looked toward Lily.
Then she whispered, “I’m sorry.”
Rosa was freed and rushed to her daughter.
Paramedics surrounded Victoria.
Caroline was dragged past in handcuffs.
She looked at Ethan.
“You think this makes you different from your father?”
Ethan held Lily closer.
“No.”
May you like
He looked at Rosa.
“What I do next will.”
