Chapter 8: The Secret Beneath the Keys

Chapter 8: The Secret Beneath the Keys
Ethan raced back to the Greenwich estate.
The east parlor was dark.
For most of his life, the grand piano had been a monument to his mother.
Now it might hold evidence of crimes committed by his father.
His security team removed the lower panels.
Nothing.
They inspected the legs, the soundboard and the bench.
Still nothing.
Then Ethan remembered Lily’s first words about the piano.
“It sings.”
He lifted the fallboard above the keys.
Beneath middle C, a thin strip of wood looked newer than the others.
A technician removed it.
Inside was a waterproof envelope.
The contents included a flash drive, handwritten laboratory notes and a letter addressed to Ethan.
He recognized his father’s handwriting.
Ethan,
If you are reading this, the past has finally reached you. Rosa Martinez was right about Halcyon. The trial data was manipulated. Patients died. I learned the truth after I forced her out of your life. By then, exposing the company would have destroyed Caldwell Industries and implicated the Haynes family. I chose silence.
Your mother would have despised me for it.
Caroline knows where the original patients’ records are. I kept these copies as insurance. She believes I destroyed them.
I told myself I protected you. In truth, I protected my name.
Do better than I did.
Ethan lowered the letter.
His grief hardened into purpose.
The flash drive contained internal messages between Charles Haynes, Caroline and executives at Halcyon.
One message referred to Rosa directly.
The student must be discredited before she contacts regulators.
Another said:
Caldwell’s son cannot know about the pregnancy. It gives her leverage.
Ethan sent copies to federal investigators.
Then he studied maps of industrial sites near train tracks where chemicals were stored.
One property stood out.
An abandoned Halcyon distribution warehouse in New Jersey.
It belonged to a shell company controlled by Charles Haynes.
Ethan wanted to go immediately.
The federal agents ordered him to stay back.
He ignored them.
At the warehouse, Rosa sat tied to a chair.
Lily was locked inside a small office nearby.
Victoria entered wearing dark trousers and a long coat.
Rosa stared at her.
“You kidnapped a child.”
Victoria flinched.
“This was not supposed to happen.”
“You came with them.”
“My mother said we only needed the records.”
“You pushed Lily, lied about it, and now you’re standing in a warehouse while she cries behind that door.”
Victoria looked toward the office.
“I never wanted Ethan’s child hurt.”
“You wanted her erased.”
“I wanted my life back.”
“It was never yours.”
Victoria slapped Rosa.
The sound echoed through the warehouse.
Then she looked horrified by her own action.
Rosa tasted blood.
“You keep saying you’re not violent,” she said quietly. “Yet people keep ending up on the floor around you.”
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“You have no idea what my mother is capable of.”
“Then help us.”
“I can’t.”
“Yes, you can.”
“If I turn against her, she will destroy me.”
Rosa looked toward the office where Lily was crying.
“She already has.”
Outside, headlights appeared through the dirty warehouse windows.
Victoria turned.
A black SUV stopped near the loading entrance.
Caroline stepped out.
May you like
But another vehicle followed behind her.
Ethan’s car.
