Chapter 3 – The Truth Behind the Uniform

Alex didn't laugh.

Instead, he slowly stepped toward her.

"I owe you an apology."

Before she could answer, an older man hurried through the crowd.

His expensive suit and silver hair immediately caught everyone's attention.

The ballroom host rushed to greet him.

"Mr. Laurent... we weren't expecting you."

The distinguished gentleman ignored everyone else.

His eyes stopped on the waitress.

His expression softened.

"There you are."

He removed his gloves and smiled warmly.

"I've been looking for you all evening."

The ballroom froze again.

The waitress lowered her head respectfully.

"I'm sorry, Grandfather."

"I wanted to do this on my own."

Alex felt the blood drain from his face.

Grandfather?

The Woman in Silver looked ready to faint.

Mr. Laurent slowly turned toward the crowd.

"My granddaughter insisted on working here without revealing her identity."

"She wanted to learn how people treat someone with no title, no wealth, and no influence."

He paused.

"It appears she received her answer."

An uncomfortable silence settled over the ballroom.

Several guests quietly looked away.

Others remembered laughing only minutes earlier.

Mr. Laurent's voice grew colder.

"Our family recently acquired this hotel."

"I believe tonight has shown me exactly which employees—and which guests—deserve to remain welcome here."

Alex suddenly understood.
