Chapter 1: The Daughter Behind the Dumpster

Chapter 1: The Daughter Behind the Dumpster

Alexander Sterling had everything people dreamed of.

A billion-dollar empire.

A name respected across New York.

A mansion overlooking the city.

But the one thing he had never been able to buy back was the three years he lost with his daughter.

Sophia.

The little girl he believed had been taken away from him by the woman he once loved.

Lauren.

For years, Alexander carried the same wound.

His wife had abandoned him.

At least, that was what he had been told.

His mother, Victoria Sterling, was the one who delivered the news.

“She left because she never loved this family,” Victoria had said.

“She took Sophia and disappeared because she wanted a different life.”

Alexander was devastated.

But Victoria had promised him one thing.

“I will make sure Sophia is safe.”

And every month, Alexander transferred five thousand dollars into an account controlled by his mother.

He believed his daughter was living comfortably.

Until tonight.

At Victoria’s extravagant seventieth birthday celebration, Alexander entered through the hotel service corridor.

And found his daughter searching through the trash.

Sophia looked up.

“Daddy?”

The word destroyed him.

Because the child standing in front of him wasn’t wearing designer clothes.

She wasn’t living in comfort.

She was holding leftover bread from a garbage bin.

Alexander dropped to his knees.

“Sophia... why are you doing this?”

The little girl hugged the plastic bag tightly.

“I wanted to bring food home for Mommy.”

Alexander’s heart stopped.

“Your mother?”

Sophia nodded.

“She says she’s not hungry anymore.”

“But I know she is.”

Then she whispered the sentence that changed everything.

“Daddy... we don’t get your money.”

Alexander felt his blood turn cold.

Before he could ask another question...

A familiar voice interrupted them.

“Alexander?”

Victoria stood behind him.
