Chapter 6 - WHAT CAIO REMEMBERED

Henrique touched the scratches with one finger.
C-A-I-O.
His son had been inside that room.
There was no explanation left.
Only guilt.
A security guard entered behind them.
“Mr. Vasconcelos, you need to leave.”
Henrique turned.
“This building exists because my foundation paid for it.”
“Sir, we’ve been instructed—”
“By whom?”
The guard hesitated.
Samara already knew.
“Laura.”
Henrique’s phone rang.
His attorney.
Then his board chairman.
Then three journalists.
Laura moved fast.
By the time Henrique and Samara reached the parking lot, the story was online.
BILLIONAIRE DISRUPTS AUTISM CENTER AFTER PERSONAL DISPUTE.
Henrique stared at his phone.
Samara read over his shoulder.
“They’re making you look unstable.”
“They’re making me look emotional.”
“A powerful man’s worst nightmare.”
He almost smiled.
Then another message arrived.
From Laura.
The board meets at noon. Come alone.
Henrique drove home instead.
Caio was sitting on the living room floor lining up wooden train cars.
Henrique knelt several feet away.
For once, he didn’t ask a question.
He waited.
Samara remained near the doorway.
Ten minutes passed.
Henrique’s knees hurt.
His phone vibrated repeatedly.
He ignored it.
Finally Caio pushed one train car toward him.
Henrique touched it.
Caio pushed a second car toward Samara.
She sat down.
Then Caio whispered, “Blue room.”
Henrique’s throat tightened.
“I’m listening.”
Caio tapped his fingers.
Tap.
Tap.
Pause.
Samara hummed the rhythm.
Caio closed his eyes.
“Laura said quiet.”
Henrique stared at him.
“What did Laura say?”
Samara raised a hand.
“Don’t repeat the question.”
Henrique stopped.
Caio continued on his own.
“Bad pictures.”
Henrique’s stomach dropped.
Samara spoke gently.
“What pictures?”
Caio pointed toward Henrique’s phone.
“Camera.”
Then he put both hands around his own wrists.
“Hold.”
Henrique looked away.
He couldn’t breathe.
Caio crawled toward a cabinet.
He removed a small backpack.
From inside, he pulled a crumpled sheet of paper.
A printed photograph.
Henrique recognized a Halcyon therapy room.
Caio sat at a table.
Laura stood behind him.
A camera crew stood in front.
A caption beneath the photograph read:
VASCONCELOS FOUNDATION: TRANSFORMING CHILDREN, TRANSFORMING FUTURES.
Henrique remembered the campaign.
It had won an advertising award.
He had approved it without attending the shoot.
Caio turned the page over.
On the back, in Laura’s handwriting:
If he refuses, use Room B until he settles. We need usable footage today.
Henrique went silent.
Samara’s voice was barely audible.
“She used him for a commercial.”
Henrique looked at his son.
“No.”
Caio stared at the floor.
Henrique’s eyes filled.
“She used him because I let everyone else raise him.”
His phone rang again.
This time he answered.
It was his house security chief.
“Mr. Vasconcelos, we have a problem.”
Henrique stood.
“What?”
“Ms. Almeida entered the property twenty minutes ago.”
Henrique looked around.
Laura wasn’t there.
The security chief continued.
“She accessed your private office.”
Henrique ran upstairs.
The office safe was open.
One folder was missing.
May you like
The folder containing Caio’s medical records.
And the documents that could prove Laura had forged Henrique’s signature.
