Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR

Henrique stared at Laura.
“What are you doing here?”
She didn’t blink.
“I could ask you the same thing.”
Samara looked from one to the other.
Laura’s expression was calm.
Too calm.
Dr. Brandão approached with both hands open.
“Henrique, this is clearly a misunderstanding.”
“Open the door.”
Brandão lowered his voice.
“There is a patient experiencing an episode.”
“A child?”
“Henrique—”
“Open it.”
Laura stepped between them.
“You’re making a scene.”
Henrique looked at her as if seeing her for the first time.
“My son said there’s a blue room with no windows.”
Laura folded her arms.
“Children repeat things.”
“Caio barely speaks around strangers.”
Samara saw fear flash across Laura’s face.
Only for a second.
It was enough.
Henrique pointed at the door.
“Open it now or I call the police.”
Brandão sighed.
Then entered a code.
The lock clicked.
The room beyond was small.
Blue padded walls.
No windows.
A teenage boy sat in one corner crying.
Two employees stood nearby.
One held a restraint belt.
Henrique stopped breathing.
Samara’s hands began shaking.
For a moment she wasn’t thirty-three.
She was twenty-six again.
Standing beside Daniel’s hospital bed.
Listening to him repeat the same three sounds for hours because words had disappeared completely.
Henrique stepped inside.
“What is that belt for?”
Brandão said, “Safety.”
“Whose?”
No one answered.
Henrique turned toward Laura.
“You knew?”
“We’ve discussed Halcyon protocols.”
“We discussed therapy.”
“It is therapy.”
Samara stared at her.
“No. It’s control.”
Laura’s face hardened.
“You’re a waitress.”
“And you’re a woman who thinks job titles decide who gets to recognize cruelty.”
Henrique held up a hand.
“Samara.”
She looked at him.
He spoke quietly.
“Let me handle this.”
Samara laughed once.
“That sentence is exactly how places like this survive.”
Henrique absorbed the blow.
Then he faced Brandão.
“Effective immediately, Vasconcelos Family Foundation funding is frozen.”
Brandão went white.
“You can’t do that.”
“I just did.”
Laura grabbed Henrique’s arm.
“You freeze those accounts and reporters will start asking questions.”
“Good.”
“You’ll destroy years of work.”
“If this is the work, it deserves to be destroyed.”
Laura leaned close.
“You have a merger vote in forty-eight hours.”
Henrique went still.
Samara noticed.
Laura lowered her voice further.
“If the board believes you’ve lost control of the foundation, they can delay the Argentum deal.”
Henrique looked at the teenager in the blue room.
Then at the belt.
“Let them.”
Laura stared at him.
Something changed in her eyes.
Not hurt.
Calculation.
She stepped away.
“You’re making a very expensive mistake.”
Henrique answered, “Maybe expensive mistakes are the only kind I notice.”
Laura walked out.
Brandão followed her.
Samara remained beside Henrique.
“That wasn’t the worst room,” she said.
He looked at her.
“How do you know?”
She pointed toward a security camera.
“Because Daniel used to draw the same camera.”
Henrique followed her gaze.
Samara’s voice dropped.
“He drew three.”
Henrique saw only one.
Then he noticed another door at the back.
No sign.
No handle from the inside.
May you like
And scratched into the blue paint were five small letters.
CAIO.
