Chapter 14 - CAROLINE’S FINAL MOVE

Caroline had injured herself in jail.
During transport to the hospital, an accomplice created a traffic collision.
She escaped.
Police believed she had money hidden overseas.
Elliot moved Lila to a secure property.
Two days passed.
Nothing.
Then a package arrived.
Inside was Sarah’s old violin.
Lila stared at it.
“That was Mom’s.”
Elliot’s blood turned cold.
The violin had been stored in a private Mercer warehouse.
Someone had accessed it.
A note lay inside.
ONE LAST MEETING.
NO POLICE.
An address followed.
Elliot called police immediately.
He had learned something.
Secrets protected people like Caroline.
Light destroyed them.
The address led to an abandoned music hall outside Albany.
Police surrounded it quietly.
Elliot entered wearing a wire.
Caroline stood on the stage.
Sarah’s photograph sat on a chair.
“You brought police.”
“Yes.”
Caroline laughed.
“At least you finally learned.”
“What do you want?”
“To explain.”
“You had months.”
“I want Lila to understand.”
“She understands enough.”
Caroline’s face hardened.
“Sarah ruined everything.”
“No.”
“You ruined yourself.”
Caroline began pacing.
“Sarah could have taken the money.”
“What money?”
“I offered her half a million dollars.”
Elliot stared.
“To stay quiet?”
“Yes.”
“And she refused.”
“Of course she refused.”
Caroline’s voice became bitter.
“She wanted to be righteous.”
“No.”
Elliot looked at Sarah’s photograph.
“She wanted children to be safe.”
Caroline laughed.
“Do you know what people like her never understand?”
“Tell me.”
“Institutions survive because someone does ugly things quietly.”
Elliot shook his head.
“That’s what cowards tell themselves.”
Caroline’s face twisted.
She reached behind the curtain.
Police moved.
Caroline pulled out a small gasoline can.
She poured it across the stage.
Elliot stared.
“Don’t.”
“Why?”
“You think burning this place changes anything?”
She held a lighter.
“No.”
“But it changes my ending.”
Elliot slowly stepped closer.
“You still think everything is about controlling the story.”
Caroline’s hand shook.
“It is.”
“No.”
He pointed toward the cameras hidden by police.
“The truth is already outside this room.”
Caroline froze.
“You’re recording?”
“Yes.”
Her face collapsed.
For the first time, she had nothing left.
No board.
No money.
No reputation.
No secrets powerful enough to save her.
She dropped the lighter.
Police rushed the stage.
Caroline screamed as they handcuffed her.
“This isn’t over!”
Elliot looked at her.
“Yes.”
“It is.”
Outside, dawn was beginning.
Lila waited in a police vehicle.
Elliot opened the door.
She threw her arms around him.
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
“You?”
“Yes.”
Lila looked toward the building.
“Is she going back to jail?”
“Yes.”
“For good?”
Elliot exhaled.
“For a long time.”
Lila rested her head against his shoulder.
“Then can we stop talking about her?”
Elliot smiled.
“I’d like that.”
But there was still one thing left to do.
