Chapter 11 - THE CABIN

Police told Elliot not to go.
He went anyway.
But not alone.
State police surrounded the property.
Richard insisted on coming.
The cabin sat deep in the Vermont woods.
Caroline stood on the porch.
No weapon visible.
Peyton sat inside near the window.
Elliot walked forward.
“You threatened my daughter.”
Caroline smiled faintly.
“You think this is about your daughter?”
“It became about my daughter the second you allowed her to be abused.”
Caroline’s face hardened.
“I never told Peyton to hurt Lila.”
“You taught her who deserved protection.”
Caroline flinched.
That landed.
“You taught her that poor children should be grateful for whatever people like you give them.”
“I built that scholarship program.”
“You stole from it.”
Her smile disappeared.
Elliot continued.
“You bullied families into silence.”
“You falsified records.”
“You helped cover up what happened to Sarah.”
Caroline’s eyes changed.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The real reason you’re here.”
She stepped closer.
“You don’t care about that school.”
“You care about your dead wife.”
Elliot looked at her.
“I care about both.”
Caroline laughed.
“Sarah was impossible.”
Richard shouted,
“Caroline.”
She ignored him.
“She thought kindness made her brave.”
Elliot’s hands tightened.
“What happened that night?”
Caroline looked at him.
“Victor was supposed to scare her.”
“How?”
“Follow her.”
“Then?”
“She panicked.”
Elliot stopped breathing.
Caroline looked toward the woods.
“She accelerated.”
“Did Victor hit her?”
Caroline didn’t answer.
“Did he hit her?”
“Yes.”
Richard closed his eyes.
Peyton began crying inside.
Caroline continued.
“He said it was an accident.”
Elliot’s voice shook.
“And you paid the witness.”
“Yes.”
“You buried it.”
“I protected the school.”
“You protected yourself.”
Caroline’s face twisted.
“You think your empire is clean?”
“This isn’t about my company.”
“Power is power.”
“No.”
Elliot stepped closer.
“Power is what you do when nobody can stop you.”
He looked toward Peyton.
“And children learn from what they watch.”
Caroline turned.
Peyton was standing in the doorway.
Tears streamed down her face.
“Mom.”
Caroline’s expression softened.
“Sweetheart.”
Peyton shook her head.
“Did you know about Mrs. Reed?”
Caroline said nothing.
Peyton backed away.
“You told me Lila’s mom was trash.”
Caroline’s face changed.
“I was angry.”
“You told me scholarship kids were parasites.”
“Peyton—”
“You said they took things from people like us.”
Richard stepped toward his daughter.
Peyton moved to him.
Caroline suddenly reached into her coat.
Police shouted.
“Hands!”
Elliot moved instinctively in front of Peyton.
Caroline pulled out a phone.
Not a weapon.
She held it up.
“There are things on this phone that will destroy people you care about.”
Elliot stared.
“Then release them.”
Caroline froze.
“You think I’m afraid?”
She looked confused.
Elliot continued.
“If I did something wrong, expose it.”
“If Richard did something wrong, expose it.”
“If Crowe did something wrong, expose him.”
“That’s the difference between you and me.”
Caroline’s hand trembled.
“You used secrets to control people.”
“I’m done being controlled.”
Police moved in.
Caroline dropped the phone.
She was arrested.
But as officers placed her in the car, she looked at Elliot.
“You still don’t know everything.”
He stared.
Caroline smiled.
“Ask Richard who paid for Sarah’s surveillance.”
May you like
Elliot slowly turned toward Richard.
Richard’s face went white.
