CHAPTER 14 — MRS. BELL’S CONFESSION

CHAPTER 14 — MRS. BELL’S CONFESSION
Mrs. Bell didn’t deny it.
She sat in the mansion library with her hands folded.
“Yes,” she said. “I authorized the transfer.”
Ethan placed the photograph on the table.
“Why?”
“Your father asked me to.”
Luke stood beside the fireplace.
“That money funded the men who kidnapped me.”
“No. It was meant to expose Richard.”
Mrs. Bell explained that their father had created a false account to bait Richard into moving stolen funds.
But Richard discovered the trap.
He redirected the money toward Luke’s kidnapping and forged Mrs. Bell’s authorization.
“Why didn’t you tell the police?”
“Richard threatened my daughter.”
Ethan stared at her.
“You had a daughter?”
“She worked as a nurse at Northpoint.”
Luke’s expression changed.
“The nurse who helped me escape.”
Mrs. Bell nodded.
“My daughter, Sarah, found you during one of Richard’s transfers. She helped you reach the border.”
“What happened to her?”
Mrs. Bell’s voice broke.
“Richard found out.”
The room fell silent.
“She disappeared fourteen years ago.”
Mrs. Bell had remained inside the Calloway household, pretending loyalty to Richard while quietly collecting evidence.
She had protected Eleanor at Northpoint.
She had hidden the cellar key.
She had waited for the brothers to reunite.
“Why wait so long?” Ethan asked.
“Because I was a coward.”
Mrs. Bell looked at Luke.
“And because every year I told myself one more document would make the case stronger.”
Luke sat across from her.
“You lost your daughter trying to save me.”
Mrs. Bell began crying.
“I lost her because I obeyed a monster before I found the courage to resist him.”
Ethan understood the pattern at last.
Richard had not controlled the family through strength.
He had controlled them through shame.
Every person believed their own secret was too ugly to reveal.
So they stayed silent.
And the silence protected him.
Detective Cole later confirmed Sarah Bell had been killed under a false identity.
Her remains were returned to her mother.
At the funeral, Ethan stood beside Mrs. Bell.
No empty coffin.
No false name.
No lies.
Afterward, Noah placed a white flower on Sarah’s grave.
“She saved Uncle Luke?”
“Yes,” Ethan said.
“Then she saved me too.”
Ethan looked at his son.
“How?”
Noah took his hand.
“Because Uncle Luke saved me.”
For once, the truth traveled through the family without hurting anyone.

But Richard’s trial still remained.
And he had promised to destroy them all from the witness stand.
