CHAPTER 13 — THE REAL HEIR

CHAPTER 13 — THE REAL HEIR

The will named their mother, Eleanor Calloway, as controlling trustee.

Until both sons could prove they were capable of leading without destroying each other, neither would control the company.

Ethan read the final paragraph aloud.

My sons will inherit equally only when they learn that a family cannot survive if every relationship is treated like a transaction.

Luke leaned back against his pillow.

“Dad knew us well.”

Ethan almost smiled.

Their mother entered with Mrs. Bell.

“I intend to honor his wishes.”

Ethan looked at her.

“You want to run the company?”

“No. I want to dismantle the system that allowed Richard to control it.”

Over the next month, Eleanor removed every director who had ignored suspicious transactions.

Employee pension accounts were restored.

The private security division was dissolved.

Richard’s stolen assets were used to compensate his victims.

Ethan and Luke appeared together before shareholders.

Luke told the truth about his captivity.

Ethan admitted he had spent years valuing the company above his family.

The stock fell for three days.

Then it recovered stronger than before.

Honesty, Ethan discovered, was expensive.

But lies had cost far more.

Olivia moved out of the mansion.

She did not fight for money.

She did not demand the company shares promised in their prenuptial agreement.

She rented a small townhouse near Noah’s school and began cooperating fully with prosecutors.

Ethan allowed supervised visits.

Noah loved his mother.

Ethan refused to punish the child for her failures.

One afternoon, Olivia asked Ethan to speak privately.

“I know you’ll never trust me again.”

“That isn’t a problem anymore.”

She flinched.

He continued.

“Trust matters only when a relationship still exists.”

Olivia lowered her eyes.

“I did love you.”

“You loved what I gave you.”

“No.”

“You lied about how we met, why you married me, who Noah’s father was, why Luke was in my home, and who Richard was. Which part of our marriage was mine?”

She had no answer.

Ethan turned to leave.

Olivia spoke behind him.

“There’s one more thing.”

He stopped.

“Richard kept a list of everyone who helped him. One name was missing from the prosecution files.”

She handed him a photograph.

It showed their father standing beside Richard and Mrs. Bell.

On the back was a handwritten note.

Margaret Bell authorized the first transfer.

Ethan looked toward the mansion.

Mrs. Bell had raised him.

Protected Noah.

Saved them from the fire.

And according to the document in his hand—

She had helped Richard begin everything.
