Chapter 2: The Letter Hidden for Five Years

Ethan held the envelope with shaking hands.

His fingers trembled as he touched his mother’s handwriting.

He knew that handwriting.

The same handwriting that used to appear on birthday cards.

The same handwriting that used to leave notes beside his breakfast.

His eyes filled with tears.

“She wrote this?”

Lily nodded.

“She told me to give it to you when you were ready.”

Daniel moved quickly.

“Ethan, you don’t know what that girl is doing.”

But Ethan pulled the letter closer.

For the first time in years, he ignored him.

He opened it.

Inside was a single page.

My precious Ethan,

If you are reading this, it means I couldn’t keep my promise to be there beside you.

The boy’s breathing stopped.

But please remember something. Your legs do not decide who you are. Your heart does.

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

Someone will tell you that you are weak. Someone will convince you that you need to be protected forever.

Don’t believe them.

You are stronger than anyone knows.

Ethan looked up slowly.

His eyes moved toward Daniel.

And Daniel looked away.

The boy noticed.

“Why didn’t you show me this?”

Nobody answered.

Lily stood.

“Because your uncle wanted control.”

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Lily stepped closer.

“I know your mother discovered you weren’t born with this condition.”

The room froze.

Ethan stared.

“What?”

Daniel’s face lost all color.

Lily continued.

“She found medical records. Someone changed your diagnosis.”

Ethan’s hands tightened.

“Changed?”

Lily nodded.

“Your injury was real. But your doctors were told not to continue certain treatments.”

The room erupted in whispers.

Daniel’s expression became desperate.

“You’re lying.”

But Lily looked at Ethan.

“Your mother was trying to expose the truth.”

Ethan felt like the entire world had shifted beneath him.

All those years.

All those doctors.

All those times he was told to accept his fate.

Maybe they were never the truth.

“Why?” Ethan whispered.

“Why would anyone do this to me?”

Lily looked toward Daniel.

And the answer was already clear.

Money.

Power.

Control.

Daniel had inherited everything after Evelyn’s death.

Including Ethan’s trust fund.

The boy who everyone thought was helpless had actually been the key to a fortune.

Daniel had kept him dependent because a healthy Ethan would eventually discover everything.

Suddenly, Ethan’s wheelchair moved.

Not because someone pushed it.

Because Ethan pressed the controls himself.

He turned toward Daniel.

“You knew.”

Daniel stepped back.

“Ethan, listen—”

“No.”

The boy’s voice was quiet.

But stronger than ever.

“For five years, you made me believe I was trapped.”

Lily held his hand.

May you like

And for the first time…

Ethan didn’t feel like a prisoner.
