Chapter 1: The Girl Who Knew His Secret

The entire reception hall remained silent after the girl’s final words.

“Because your mother asked me to find you.”

The man in the gray suit stopped walking.

For the first time, his anger disappeared.

Only shock remained.

The boy looked up at him.

“My mother?”

His voice was barely a whisper.

Everyone in the room knew the story.

His mother, Evelyn Carter, had died five years ago in a car accident.

At least, that was what they had been told.

The man in the gray suit, Daniel Carter, was the boy’s uncle and legal guardian. He had controlled every decision since Evelyn’s death.

The boy’s doctors.

His therapy.

His education.

Even who he was allowed to see.

And now, a barefoot stranger had walked into their world and claimed she carried a message from the one person he had spent years missing.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her, Ethan.”

The boy’s eyes narrowed slightly.

It was the first time he had ever heard his uncle sound afraid.

The girl noticed it too.

“My name is Lily,” she said softly.

She looked at Ethan.

“Your mother didn’t want you to grow up believing you were broken.”

The boy swallowed.

“No one can fix me.”

Lily shook her head.

“She never said you needed fixing.”

She gently squeezed his hand.

“She said you needed someone to remind you that you were still fighting.”

A strange silence filled the room.

Because those words were something only Evelyn would have said.

Ethan stared at the girl.

“How did you know my mother?”

Lily looked down.

For the first time, sadness appeared in her eyes.

“Because she saved my life.”

The guests whispered.

Daniel’s face changed.

“You don’t belong here.”

Lily ignored him.

“Your mother found me three years ago. I was sleeping on the streets. I was sick, hungry, and nobody cared if I lived or died.”

She looked at Ethan.

“She took me in.”

The boy’s expression softened.

“She told me about you.”

A tear formed in Lily’s eyes.

“She said her son was the bravest person she knew.”

Ethan looked down at his legs.

“But I can’t walk.”

Lily knelt beside him.

“Not yet.”

Those two words hit him harder than anything else.

Not never.

Not impossible.

Not hopeless.

Not yet.

Then Lily reached into her torn dress and pulled out a small envelope.

The moment Daniel saw it, his face turned pale.

Because he knew exactly what it was.

A letter.

May you like

From Evelyn.

And it was never supposed to be found.
