Chapter 11 - THE RANCH

Daniel was told to stay home.

He refused.

So did Rosa.

Detective Mitchell fought them for ten minutes.

“You are civilians.”

“My son was stolen.”

Rosa’s voice didn’t shake.

Mitchell looked at Daniel.

“And you?”

“I funded half the hospitals in this state.”

“That doesn’t make you law enforcement.”

“No. It makes me the man whose family name was used to move stolen babies.”

Mitchell hated it.

But they went.

Not into the raid.

To a command center three miles from the ranch.

The property looked peaceful from a distance.

Snow.

Wood fences.

Tall pines.

A red barn.

A place families might rent for Christmas.

At 4:32 a.m., tactical officers moved in.

Daniel watched monitors.

Rosa held Ethan.

Claire had insisted on coming too.

No one stopped her.

“Main house clear.”

“Barn clear.”

“Three infants located.”

“Medical team entering.”

Then static.

An officer shouted over the radio.

“Movement in the basement!”

Gunfire.

Rosa flinched.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Minutes stretched.

Then—

“Suspect in custody.”

Claire stopped breathing.

“Evelyn?”

Mitchell listened.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Claire sat down.

Her mother had finally been caught.

Daniel expected relief.

Instead he felt hollow.

An hour later, officers brought Evelyn out.

Even in handcuffs, she looked elegant.

Gray coat.

Pearl earrings.

Perfect posture.

She saw Claire.

Then Daniel.

Then Rosa.

Her eyes landed on Ethan.

And she smiled.

Rosa stepped forward.

“You stole my son.”

Evelyn didn’t blink.

“I saved him.”

Rosa lunged, but Daniel caught her.

“You drugged me!”

“You were poor.”

Rosa screamed.

“You told me he died!”

Evelyn tilted her head.

“And what life would you have given him?”

Daniel stared at her.

“That’s how you justified it?”

“I placed children in homes that could provide for them.”

“You sold them.”

“I gave them futures.”

“You gave yourself money.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Money is how futures are purchased, Daniel.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Mom.”

Evelyn looked at her daughter.

Claire’s voice cracked.

“You tried to kill me.”

Evelyn’s expression barely changed.

“You became a liability.”

Claire recoiled as if slapped.

For the first time, she saw her mother clearly.

Detective Mitchell pulled Evelyn away.

Then Daniel noticed Dr. Reed being carried from the basement on a stretcher.

Alive.

Barely.

Daniel ran toward him.

Reed opened swollen eyes.

“The babies…”

“They’re safe.”

Reed grabbed Daniel’s wrist.

“No.”

“What?”

“Not those babies.”

His grip tightened.

“Your baby.”

Daniel froze.

“My baby died.”

Reed shook his head.

“No.”

Daniel’s world tilted.

May you like

Reed whispered:

“Your son is alive.”
