Chapter 1 - THE SILENCE

“Why does he stop crying for you?”
Daniel Whitmore’s voice cut through the foyer like a knife.
Three seconds earlier, his six-month-old son had been screaming so hard his tiny face had turned red. The sound had filled every corner of the Whitmore mansion, bouncing off marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and walls covered with dead relatives staring down from gold frames.
Daniel had been pacing for almost forty minutes.
“Come on, buddy. Come on, Ethan. Daddy’s here.”
Nothing worked.
Bottle. Nothing.
Pacifier. Nothing.
Walking. Rocking. Singing. Nothing.
Then Rosa stepped out from the hallway.
The maid looked terrified.
“Mr. Whitmore… may I?”
Daniel barely had the strength to answer.
“May you what?”
“Hold him.”
“He doesn’t want to be held.”
“Please.”
Something in her voice made him stop.
It wasn’t confidence.
It was desperation.
Daniel handed Ethan over.
The change was instant.
The baby went silent.
Not slowly.
Not after a few soft words.
Instantly.
His fists unclenched. His breathing settled. His wide blue eyes locked onto Rosa’s face.
Then Ethan reached up and touched her cheek.
Rosa broke.
Tears rolled down her face.
Daniel stared.
“Rosa?”
She quickly looked away.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“I just… I hate seeing babies cry.”
Daniel’s exhaustion disappeared.
He watched the way she held Ethan.
Not like an employee.
Not even like an experienced babysitter.
She held him close against the left side of her chest, rocking with a slow rhythm Daniel had seen before.
His wife, Claire, used to rock Ethan exactly that way.
Before she stopped.
Before she started saying the baby was “too needy.”
Before she began sleeping in the guest wing.
Ethan made a soft sound.
Rosa whispered something in Spanish.
Daniel stepped closer.
“What did you say?”
“Nothing.”
“You said something.”
She wiped her face.
“Just something my mother used to say.”
Ethan smiled.
Daniel felt cold.
His son almost never smiled at strangers.
Yet here he was, staring at Rosa like she was the safest person in the world.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“How long have you worked in this house?”
“Seven months.”
Seven months.
He looked at Ethan.
Six months old.
His stomach tightened.
“Rosa.”
She froze.
“Were you here the night Ethan was born?”
The color drained from her face.
Before she could answer, a woman’s voice came from the staircase.
“Daniel.”
Claire stood above them in a white silk robe.
Her eyes moved from Daniel…
to Ethan…
to Rosa.
And the moment she saw the baby in Rosa’s arms, Claire’s face changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
Pure fear.
May you like
Then she said four words Daniel would never forget.
“Give him back. Now.”
