Chapter 8 - THE FIRE

Paloma screamed her children's names before the car stopped.

Gustavo grabbed her arm.

"Wait."

"My babies are inside."

"No."

Daniel pointed toward the main house.

"The nanny moved them twenty minutes ago."

Paloma froze.

"What?"

"Security protocol after Victor called."

Her knees weakened.

All four babies were safe.

The fire had started in the guesthouse kitchen.

Firefighters contained it quickly.

But the nursery suffered smoke damage.

Paloma stood outside holding Elena while Rafael held Mateo for the first time in three months.

He cried harder than the baby.

Sofia stared at him suspiciously.

Lucas grabbed his beard.

For one brief moment, the investigation disappeared.

There were only six people.

A mother.

A father.

And four babies who had no idea how close their family had come to being permanently broken.

Then Daniel emerged from the guesthouse.

"The book is gone."

Paloma closed her eyes.

Victor had gotten what he wanted.

Or so he believed.

Rafael suddenly smiled.

"What?"

Gustavo asked.

"The card isn't in the book."

Paloma stared at him.

"Where is it?"

Rafael pointed at the old cloth sling she had used to carry the babies.

"You remember when I repaired that strap?"

Paloma looked down.

A small section had been double stitched.

Rafael had moved the card before disappearing.

"Why?"

"I realized the book was too obvious."

Paloma almost hit him.

Instead, she laughed.

For the first time since Gustavo found her.

A real laugh.

Gustavo looked at Daniel.

"Make copies."

"Already thinking it."

Within hours, investigators had the entire file.

Bank records.

Forged signatures.

Recorded conversations.

Victor discussing payments.

Victor ordering Rafael's personnel file erased.

Victor telling an associate to frighten Rafael.

Everything.

But there was one recording nobody expected.

Eduardo's voice.

Gustavo listened.

Victor was trying to convince Eduardo to transfer money.

Eduardo refused.

Then Eduardo said:

If you touch Rafael or his family, I'm going to Gustavo.

Gustavo replayed it.

His brother had been foolish.

Greedy.

Weak.

But when the situation crossed a line, he had tried to stop it.

That didn't erase his responsibility.

But truth rarely arrived clean.

The next morning, police arrested Eduardo.

He surrendered voluntarily.

Gustavo stood beside him before officers took him away.

"I'm sorry."

Eduardo whispered.

"Tell the truth."

"I will."

"All of it."

Eduardo nodded.

Then he looked toward Paloma.

"I didn't know what Victor would do."

Paloma held Sofia.

"You knew enough to ask fewer questions."

Eduardo lowered his head.

"You're right."

No forgiveness came.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

But accountability had begun.

Victor remained missing.

Until noon.

Gustavo received a message.

A photograph.

Victor stood beside a private airplane.

Below it were six words.

You should have kept driving, Gustavo.

Gustavo stared at the message.

May you like

Then another arrived.

Now everyone pays for your kindness.
