Chapter 12 - FOUR FIRST BIRTHDAYS

The quadruplets turned one on a Saturday.

Paloma planned something small.

Gustavo ignored that instruction completely.

His backyard filled with balloons.

Four cakes.

Four high chairs.

Friends.

Employees.

Neighbors.

Even the motel manager who had helped Paloma that first night received an invitation.

Paloma walked outside carrying Sofia.

Her mouth fell open.

"Gustavo."

"What?"

"I said small."

"This is small."

"There are sixty people here."

"Fifty-eight."

She glared.

He smiled.

For once, Paloma didn't argue.

Mateo destroyed his cake immediately.

Lucas cried when everyone sang.

Elena tried to eat a candle before it was lit.

Sofia stared suspiciously at her frosting for thirty seconds before putting both hands into it.

Rafael stood behind them laughing.

Paloma watched him.

Something had changed.

Not suddenly.

Not magically.

Trust was returning in inches.

One diaper.

One midnight feeding.

One kept promise at a time.

Later, Gustavo raised a glass.

"I don't usually give speeches."

Everyone laughed because that was obviously false.

He continued.

"One year ago, four children entered this world together."

"Nine months later, I met their mother."

Paloma looked down.

"She was walking down a road that should have broken her."

"It didn't."

"Because some people confuse strength with never needing help."

Gustavo looked at Paloma.

"That's not strength."

"Strength is continuing long enough to accept help when it finally arrives."

Paloma's eyes filled.

Gustavo raised his glass.

"To Mateo, Sofia, Lucas, and Elena."

"And to their mother."

Everyone applauded.

Rafael didn't look jealous.

He looked proud.

That mattered too.

After the guests left, Paloma found Gustavo sitting alone.

"You okay?"

"Yeah."

"Liar."

He smiled.

"Today would have been Rosa's birthday too."

Paloma sat beside him.

Neither spoke for a while.

Finally, Paloma said:

"Maybe that's why you were supposed to find us."

Gustavo looked at her.

"I don't know if I believe things happen for a reason."

"Neither do I."

She watched the babies through the window.

"But I believe we can give them one afterward."

Gustavo smiled.

The following week, Victor entered a guilty plea on multiple charges.

The financial investigation recovered most of the stolen funds.

Gustavo announced that part of the recovered money would establish an emergency assistance program for employees facing housing crises.

He named it the Rosa Fund.

When he told Paloma, she cried.

Then she became the first person he asked to help administer it.

"Why me?"

"Because you've been on the other side of the desk."

Paloma accepted.

But she added one rule.

"No humiliating people."

"Agreed."

"No making mothers prove they're desperate enough."

"Agreed."

"And emergency cases get answers the same day."

Gustavo smiled.

"You're already bossing me around."

"Someone needs to."

May you like

For the first time, what happened to Paloma was becoming something larger than survival.

It was becoming purpose.
