Chapter 14 - THE FINAL EXCHANGE

Mrs. De Los Santos laughed from the classroom floor.
“You saved your daughter.”
“Now another child will pay.”
Elena turned toward her.
“Who took Milo?”
Mrs. De Los Santos smiled.
“The last person Daniel trusted.”
Alexander’s face changed.
“No.”
Elena looked at him.
“Who?”
Alexander swallowed.
“My father.”
Elena stared at him.
“You said he was dead.”
“He disappeared after Daniel’s crash.”
“I was told he died overseas.”
Mrs. De Los Santos shook her head.
“He built the entire operation.”
“He used all of us.”
An agent’s phone rang.
A location and video appeared.
Milo sat tied to a chair inside an abandoned theater.
Beside him stood an elderly man in a black coat.
Julian Laurent.
Alexander’s father.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Bring the red case.”
“Bring Daniel’s daughter.”
“Midnight.”
“No police.”
The video ended.
Valentina’s face went pale.
“He wants me?”
Elena shook her head.
“You are not going anywhere.”
Alexander looked at the case.
“My father believes Valentina knows where Daniel hid the final evidence.”
Noah arrived at the school carrying the original blue ledger.
He opened the last page.
A handwritten note appeared beneath the names.
THE CHILD IS THE KEY.
Valentina looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
Elena remembered a necklace Daniel had given Valentina before he died.
It was a cheap silver pendant shaped like a small star.
Valentina wore it every day.
Elena touched the pendant.
The back opened with pressure.
Inside was a tiny metal key.
Alexander stared at it.
“That opens a private vault beneath the old theater.”
Rebecca prepared a tactical team.
At midnight, the theater stood in darkness.
Elena entered through the front doors carrying the red case.
Valentina walked beside her.
Federal agents surrounded the building in silence.
Alexander and Noah entered through the basement.
Julian waited on the stage.
Milo sat near him.
“You look like your father,” Julian told Valentina.
“You sound like a coward,” she replied.
Julian smiled.
“Daniel taught you courage.”
“He also taught me that courage can be used against people.”
Elena raised the red case.
“Release Milo.”
“First, the key.”
Valentina removed the pendant.
Julian freed one of Milo’s hands.
The boy ran toward Elena.
Julian grabbed Valentina instead.
He pressed a knife near her shoulder.
“Give me the case.”
Elena placed it on the stage.
Julian kicked it open.
The royal collection glittered beneath the theater lights.
He smiled.
Then the jewels began to smoke.
Julian stepped back.
Noah had replaced them with replicas coated in tracking powder.
Federal lights flooded the theater.
Rebecca’s voice filled the room.
“Julian Laurent, release the child.”
Julian dragged Valentina toward the vault entrance.
Alexander emerged from the shadows.
“Let her go, Father.”
Julian stared at his son.
“You always were weak.”
Alexander shook his head.
“No.”
“I was afraid.”
“There is a difference.”
Julian pushed Valentina away and charged at Alexander.
They crashed against the stage railing.
The old wood snapped.
Julian fell toward the orchestra pit.
Alexander grabbed his wrist.
For one moment, father and son stared at each other.
“Pull me up,” Julian begged.
Alexander tightened his grip.
Then Julian reached for the pistol hidden inside his coat.
Valentina screamed,
“He has a gun!”
Julian fired.
The bullet struck the railing.
Alexander released his hand.
Julian fell into the darkness below.
The theater went silent.
Valentina ran into her mother’s arms.
But beneath the stage, Julian’s body was gone.

A hidden tunnel stood open.
And fresh footprints led into the night.
