Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN ON THE SCREEN

The security footage played again.

Mrs. De Los Santos leaned toward Valentina with a polished smile.

Her gloved hand slipped the sapphire necklace into the open backpack.

No one inside L’Or du Temps spoke.

The silence felt heavier than the steel security doors.

Valentina stood beneath the chandeliers with tears still shining on her cheeks.

The guard slowly lowered the necklace.

Mrs. De Los Santos stared at the screen as if she could force the image to disappear.

“That video is misleading,” she finally said.

Her voice had lost its power.

The young security technician stepped closer.

“My name is Noah Reed.”

“I manage every camera in this building.”

“There is nothing misleading about the footage.”

Mrs. De Los Santos pointed at him.

“You should be careful how you speak to me.”

Noah did not move.

“You should have been careful before framing a nine-year-old child.”

Several customers began whispering.

The phones that had recorded Valentina’s humiliation were now aimed at Mrs. De Los Santos.

The security guard looked uncomfortable.

“Ma’am, I’m going to need you to remain here.”

Mrs. De Los Santos laughed sharply.

“You are not holding me anywhere.”

She turned toward the entrance.

At that moment, the private fitting-room door opened.

A woman in a simple gray dress stepped into the showroom.

Her name was Elena Ramirez.

She was Valentina’s mother.

She took one look at her daughter’s tear-streaked face and rushed across the marble floor.

“Valentina!”

Elena dropped to her knees and pulled the girl into her arms.

“What happened?”

“They said I stole something,” Valentina cried.

“I didn’t, Mom.”

“I promise.”

Elena held her daughter’s face between both hands.

“I believe you.”

“I will always believe you.”

Mrs. De Los Santos rolled her eyes.

“This little performance is touching, but I have an appointment.”

Elena slowly stood.

She looked at the sapphire necklace.

Then she looked at the footage still frozen on the monitor.

Her face changed.

She recognized the woman in the white mink coat.

“You,” Elena whispered.

Mrs. De Los Santos stopped.

Elena’s hands began to tremble.

“You were at the hospital the night my husband died.”

Mrs. De Los Santos’s expression hardened.

“I have no idea who you are.”

Elena stepped closer.

“You were wearing that same sapphire ring.”

“You argued with him outside the emergency room.”

“He told me he had discovered something inside this jewelry company.”

The store manager, Vincent Hale, suddenly appeared from his office.

He looked at Elena.

Then he looked at Mrs. De Los Santos.

For one brief second, panic passed between them.

Noah noticed it.

So did Valentina.

Vincent forced a smile.

“There has clearly been a terrible misunderstanding.”

He turned toward the customers.

“Everyone, please stop recording.”

A woman near the diamond counter raised her phone higher.

“Why?”

Vincent’s smile vanished.

“Because this is private property.”

Noah moved toward the main computer.

“The footage has already been backed up.”

Vincent looked sharply at him.

“Noah, shut down the system.”

Noah stared back.

“No.”

Vincent walked toward him.

“That was not a request.”

Before Noah could respond, every security monitor in the boutique suddenly went black.

The lights flickered once.

Then the steel entrance doors locked with a loud mechanical click.

Valentina gripped her mother’s hand.

Mrs. De Los Santos smiled.

May you like

And someone inside the store whispered,

“No one is leaving now.”
