Chapter 14 - THE FINAL SECRET

Three days later, Evelyn received another anonymous envelope.

Inside was the cemetery photograph.

Beneath it were copies of documents bearing Charles Carrington's signature.

One sentence was written across the first page.

YOUR FATHER HAD SECRETS TOO.

Evelyn immediately called Noah.

They met inside Charles's old office.

Adrian joined them.

The documents concerned a company called Meridian Holdings.

Noah searched the corporate registry.

His expression changed.

"Meridian owned eleven percent of Vale Capital."

Adrian frowned.

"That's impossible."

"Apparently not."

The ownership records dated back fifteen years.

One year before Margaret disappeared.

Evelyn stared at her father's signature.

"Why would Dad own part of Richard's company?"

Adrian understood.

"Maybe he didn't."

They sent the documents to forensic accountants.

Hours later, the answer came.

Charles had secretly purchased part of Vale Capital after discovering the original theft.

He wasn't merely investigating Richard.

He had been quietly positioning himself to take control if Richard refused to return the money.

Evelyn sat back.

"So Dad was planning his own takeover."

Noah nodded.

"He wasn't innocent."

"No."

The truth was uncomfortable.

Charles had loved his children.

He had also been ruthless.

He had hidden information.

Manipulated business relationships.

And prepared to destroy Richard financially.

But he hadn't stolen.

He hadn't threatened families.

And he hadn't altered anyone's medication.

There was a difference between being imperfect and being monstrous.

"Who sent this?" Adrian asked.

Noah checked the envelope.

"No clue."

Then Evelyn noticed a handwritten number at the bottom of one page.

It matched a safe-deposit box.

They opened it the following morning.

Inside was Charles's final journal.

The last entry was written the day he died.

If I fail tonight, Evelyn will eventually discover everything.

She will be angry that I kept secrets.

She should be.

A father who protects his children by lying eventually teaches them to live inside lies.

I learned that too late.

Evelyn stopped reading.

Her eyes filled with tears.

The final paragraph was shorter.

Richard believes power is something you take.

I taught Evelyn something different.

Real power is knowing when you could destroy someone and choosing justice instead.

Evelyn closed the journal.

Adrian stood beside her.

"There's one more thing."

Beneath the journal was a legal document.

It concerned Meridian Holdings.

Upon Charles's death, its assets transferred to Evelyn and Noah.

Noah calculated the current value.

Nearly six hundred million dollars.

Adrian stared at them.

"That money came from Vale Capital."

Evelyn nodded.

Legally, it belonged to the Carrington estate.

Morally, the situation was complicated.

Noah looked at his sister.

"What do we do?"

Evelyn remembered her father's final words.

Power wasn't what you could take.

It was what you chose to do when you had the ability to take everything.

"Return what belongs to the victims."

Noah smiled.

"All of it?"

"Every dollar that can be traced."

"And what's left?"

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

"Margaret's foundation."

Adrian stared at her.

"Evelyn..."

"Your mother lost fourteen years."

"That doesn't mean you owe us anything."

"I know."

She smiled.

"That's why I'm doing it."

For the first time since the wedding, Evelyn felt free.

Not victorious.

Free.

But there was still one unfinished piece of her old life.

The ballroom.
