Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN EVERYONE WAS WATCHING

Her name was Evelyn Carrington.

At thirty-two, she was about to marry Adrian Vale, the only son of one of the most powerful banking families in America.

To the guests filling the Grand Bellmont ballroom, Evelyn looked untouchable.

Her ivory silk gown had been handmade in Paris.

A diamond necklace that had belonged to Adrian’s grandmother rested against her throat.

Her dark hair was pinned beneath a cathedral-length veil.

Every detail suggested perfection.

But as Evelyn stood behind the ballroom doors waiting for the ceremony to begin, she couldn't stop staring at the message glowing on her phone.

DON'T MARRY HIM.

There was no name attached.

No explanation.

Just those three words.

Evelyn deleted it.

Thirty seconds later, another message appeared.

ASK ADRIAN WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR FATHER.

Her fingers went cold.

Her father, Charles Carrington, had died eleven months earlier.

A heart attack.

That was what everyone had told her.

Charles had collapsed inside his private office after a late-night board meeting.

By the time paramedics arrived, he was gone.

Evelyn had inherited controlling interest in Carrington Global.

The tragedy had nearly destroyed her.

Adrian had been the person who helped her survive it.

He had stayed beside her through the funeral.

He had held her when she couldn't sleep.

Three months later, he proposed.

Now their marriage would combine Carrington Global with Vale Capital.

A financial empire worth nearly fourteen billion dollars.

"Evelyn?"

She quickly locked her phone.

Her younger brother, Noah, stood behind her.

He was twenty-seven and looked uncomfortable in his tuxedo.

"You okay?"

"I'm fine."

"You don't look fine."

Evelyn forced a smile.

"Wedding nerves."

Noah studied her.

Their relationship had been strained since their father's death.

Noah had opposed the merger from the beginning.

He didn't trust Adrian.

He trusted Adrian's father, Richard Vale, even less.

But tonight he had promised not to cause trouble.

"You can still walk away," Noah said quietly.

Evelyn's smile disappeared.

"Don't start."

"I'm not starting anything."

"Then don't say things like that five minutes before I'm supposed to walk down the aisle."

Noah looked toward the ballroom doors.

"Five minutes before might be better than five minutes after."

Evelyn stared at him.

"Do you know something?"

Before Noah could answer, wedding coordinator Claire Donovan rushed toward them.

"We're ready."

The orchestra changed songs.

Three hundred guests rose.

The massive ballroom doors opened.

Adrian stood beneath an arch of white roses.

Handsome.

Calm.

Smiling.

Evelyn looked at him and tried to forget the message.

Then she noticed something.

Richard Vale was standing in the first row.

And beside him was Evelyn's father's former attorney, Martin Shaw.

Martin had disappeared from Carrington Global immediately after Charles died.

He hadn't attended the funeral.

He hadn't answered Evelyn's calls.

Yet somehow, he was standing at her wedding.

Richard leaned toward him.

Martin whispered something.

Then both men looked directly at Evelyn.

Her stomach tightened.

She began walking.

One step.

Then another.

Cameras flashed.

Guests smiled.

Adrian held out his hand.

Evelyn reached the altar.

"You look incredible," Adrian whispered.

She searched his face.

"Why is Martin Shaw here?"

Adrian's smile remained perfectly still.

"Who?"

"My father's attorney."

Adrian glanced toward the audience.

For less than a second, something changed in his eyes.

Fear.

Then it disappeared.

"I have no idea."

The officiant began speaking.

Evelyn barely heard him.

Her phone vibrated inside the hidden pocket of her gown.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

She ignored it.

Then Noah suddenly stood.

"Evelyn."

Every head turned.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"Noah, sit down."

But Noah wasn't looking at Adrian.

He was staring at his sister.

"You need to see your phone."

Evelyn slowly reached into her pocket.

There was another message.

This one contained a photograph.

The timestamp was from the night her father died.

Charles Carrington was standing inside his office.

Beside him was Adrian.

May you like

And beneath the photograph were six words.

ADRIAN WAS THE LAST PERSON THERE.
