Chapter 14 - THE WORD DAD

Claire brushed Lucy's hair behind one ear.
“Yes.”
Lucy looked down at Tuesday.
“Does he know?”
“He knows now.”
“Why didn't he know before?”
Claire chose each word carefully.
“Some grown-ups hid things from him. And he made mistakes because he believed them without asking enough questions.”
“Was it because of me?”
Claire held her daughter's face between her hands.
“Never. Nothing about this was your fault.”
Lucy thought for a long moment.
“Does he want to know me?”
“Very much.”
The next afternoon, Daniel came over with no presents. Claire had asked him to bring himself and listen.
Lucy sat opposite him at the kitchen table.
“I don't like mushrooms.”
“Okay.”
“I get scared when people yell.”
His face tightened.
“I'll remember.”
“And Tuesday sleeps in my bed.”
“He seems responsible.”
She almost smiled.
Then she asked why he hadn't come to her birthdays.
Daniel could have blamed Vanessa. Instead, he told her the truth in words she could carry.
“I didn't know about you. And I should have listened to your mom a long time ago. I'm sorry I missed them.”
“Will you miss the next one?”
“If your mom says it's okay, I'd really like to be there.”
Claire nodded.
The months that followed were harder than that afternoon.
Lawyers called. Witnesses gave statements. Claire endured questions that made old humiliations feel new. A paternity test confirmed what she already knew, and a parenting agreement gave Lucy a routine that didn't depend on anybody's mood.
The company formally cleared Claire's name and reached a settlement for the harm it had caused. The board removed Martin. Daniel returned only after the independent review, under stronger oversight he supported.
He also stopped defending Robert's silence as protection.
At the criminal trial, the preserved records outlasted Martin's explanations. Vanessa's messages and the altered complaint were laid before the jury. The verdicts brought consequences neither could buy away.
Claire walked out of the courthouse into cold sunshine.
Daniel waited beside Anna and Lucy.
“Is it over?” Lucy asked.
“That part is,” Claire said.

On the ride home, Daniel's phone lit up with an urgent meeting request. Lucy watched him look at it.
“Do you have to leave us now?”
