Chapter 1 - THE GLASS THAT BROKE

“Give me the box, or your little girl pays for it.”
Vanessa Sterling said it softly enough that the nearest donors kept smiling.
Then Lucy screamed.
A champagne flute shattered against the marble. Claire Dawson dropped to her knees, wrapping both arms around her six-year-old daughter. Lucy's stuffed rabbit skidded beneath a chair. The silver tin Claire had carried into the gala struck the floor, spilling papers at Vanessa's gold heels.
Three hundred people watched.
Not one stepped forward.
Vanessa crouched and closed her fingers around Claire's wrist.
“You don't want to make a scene here, do you?”
Five years disappeared. Claire was back inside Vaughn Holdings, being told that nobody would believe a disgraced employee over the family whose name covered the building.
“Let go,” she said.
“The box.”
“No.”
Footsteps pounded across the ballroom.
Daniel Vaughn forced his shoulder between them and kicked Vanessa backward. She struck a glass cabinet, sending crystal goblets rattling. A woman gasped. Someone finally called security.
Daniel was already on his knees.
“Are you hurt?”
Claire couldn't answer. Five years since she'd heard his voice this close, and her body still remembered believing it meant safety.
His eyes caught the envelope beneath a chair.
Cream paper. An embossed seal. His late father's private notary.
“Daniel, don't,” Vanessa said.
He opened it.
I, Robert Elias Vaughn, attest that the allegations used to terminate Claire Dawson were fabricated.
Daniel stopped breathing.
The statement named unauthorized transfers, forged access records, and altered security footage. It said the evidence remained in Daniel's executive office.
Then he reached the last sentence.
Vanessa Sterling had knowledge of Claire Dawson's pregnancy before Claire's termination.
“Pregnancy?”
Claire pulled Lucy closer.
The little girl looked up. Red hair clung to her wet cheeks. But her eyes were gray-blue, with the same dark ring around the iris as Daniel's.
He looked from the child to Claire.
“How old is she?”
“Six.”
Behind him, Vanessa struggled upright. She wasn't watching Claire anymore. She was staring at the affidavit.
“What about the office?” she whispered.

Daniel turned.
Vanessa's hand was already moving toward her phone.
