Chapter 12 - LILY’S CHOICE

Lily saw Kessler’s reflection in the glass door.

She didn’t recognize him immediately.

Then she remembered his photograph.

Her body moved before her mind caught up.

She pulled Ethan against her chest and stepped sideways.

Kessler’s hand missed the stroller.

“Miss Carter.”

Lily backed away.

“Stay away from us.”

Hospital security turned.

Kessler smiled.

“You’re confused.”

“No.”

Lily shouted.

“Security!”

Kessler grabbed her wrist.

Lily screamed.

Ethan began crying.

Kessler tried to pull her toward a service corridor.

Lily kicked the emergency alarm beside the door.

Sirens erupted.

Kessler cursed.

He released her.

Then ran.

Two officers chased him.

Lily dropped to her knees, shielding Ethan with her body.

“It’s okay.”

Her voice shook.

“I’ve got you.”

Ethan clung to her shirt.

Victor received the call inside the interrogation room.

He stood so quickly his chair fell.

“Is he okay?”

Reed nodded.

“Lily protected him.”

Victor closed his eyes.

Again.

She had protected his child again.

Kessler was captured in the parking garage.

Inside his bag investigators found syringes.

Sedatives.

Fake identification.

And a plane ticket.

But the most important thing was his phone.

Messages from Hale.

One read:

If the nanny interferes, make it look accidental.

Victor read it twice.

Then handed it back.

“Now?”

Reed nodded.

“Now we have conspiracy.”

Hale was arrested before he could leave Blackwood Holdings.

For the first time, the man who had controlled everyone else lost control.

“You have nothing!”

He shouted.

Federal agents cuffed him.

“You think Blackwood is innocent?”

“No.”

“You think that woman is innocent?”

He pointed at Serena’s photograph.

“No.”

“You think Daniel is?”

“No.”

The agent tightened the cuffs.

“But today we’re arresting you.”

Kessler confessed first.

He had falsified Grace’s medical report.

He had supplied Serena with medication for Ethan.

And years earlier, he had helped Hale conceal the evidence surrounding Anna’s crash.

But one question remained.

Why Grace?

The answer came from Anna’s trust records.

Grace’s birth had triggered a clause giving Anna independent control of a massive voting block.

If Grace lived, Hale could no longer manipulate the trust through Victor’s family.

Grace’s death restored the old structure.

It had never been personal.

That made it worse.

A baby had died because she complicated paperwork.

Victor sat silently when Reed told him.

Lily was beside him.

Ethan slept against her shoulder.

Victor looked at his son.

Then whispered,

“I almost married the woman who helped the man who killed his sister.”

Lily shook her head.

“You didn’t know.”

“I should have.”

“You know now.”

Victor looked at her.

“And what am I supposed to do with that?”

Lily answered quietly.

“Make sure Ethan grows up knowing none of this was his burden.”

Victor looked at his son.

For the first time, he understood exactly what revenge would cost him.

Then Reed entered.

“We have another problem.”

Victor stood.

May you like

“What?”

“Serena’s gone.”
