Chapter 1 - THE FOOTSTEPS IN THE DARK

“Stop!”
Lily Carter’s scream ripped through the marble foyer.
“You’re hurting him!”
Fourteen-month-old Ethan Blackwood was crying on the floor while Serena Montigue dragged him by one small arm.
His face had turned dark red.
His little shoes scraped helplessly across the polished stone.
Lily saw the angle of his arm and felt terror shoot through her.
“Let him go!”
Serena didn’t even look at her.
“He needs to learn.”
“He’s a baby!”
Lily lunged forward.
Serena spun around.
Her heel struck Lily hard in the stomach.
Lily crashed onto the marble.
For one terrible second, she couldn’t breathe.
Ethan screamed again.
That sound forced Lily back onto her hands and knees.
“Please.”
She crawled toward him.
“Please, Serena.”
Serena calmly stepped between them.
“You really are stupid.”
Lily looked up.
Serena’s elegant cream dress didn’t have a wrinkle in it.
Her diamond earrings glittered beneath the chandelier.
She looked exactly like the woman Chicago society adored.
Beautiful.
Educated.
Generous.
Victor Blackwood’s perfect future wife.
Nobody at those charity dinners saw this Serena.
Nobody saw what happened after Victor left the mansion.
Serena crouched beside Lily.
“Touch him again and I’ll make sure you disappear.”
Lily’s hands stopped moving.
Serena smiled.
“You’re a nanny.”
She said the word like it was an insult.
“You have no family in this city.”
“No money.”
“No influence.”
“And you seriously think Victor will believe you over me?”
Lily stared at Ethan.
His crying was getting quieter.
That frightened her more than the screaming.
“He needs a hospital.”
“He needs discipline.”
“He’s fourteen months old!”
Serena’s smile vanished.
“Lower your voice.”
Lily’s eyes filled with furious tears.
“No.”
Serena blinked.
Lily forced herself upright.
“No more.”
For six months, Lily had stayed quiet because she had been afraid.
She had documented unexplained bruises.
She had written down the dates Serena ordered staff members away from Ethan.
She had noticed medication disappearing from the nursery cabinet.
And three nights earlier, Lily had hidden her old phone behind a stack of children’s books.
That phone had recorded something Serena could never explain.
Serena didn’t know that.
Not yet.
“You think you’re brave?”
Serena whispered.
“No.”
Lily looked at Ethan.
“I’m terrified.”
“Good.”
“But I’m still not letting you touch him again.”
Serena raised her hand.
Then a sound came from the dark hallway behind her.
One slow footstep.
Serena froze.
Another step followed.
Heavy.
Measured.
Impossible to mistake.
The color drained from Serena’s face.
Victor Blackwood emerged from the shadows.
He was still wearing the black suit he had left in that morning.
Except he wasn’t supposed to return until midnight.
His eyes moved toward Ethan.
Then toward Lily on the floor.
Finally, they settled on Serena.
Nobody spoke.
Victor had built an empire because he rarely lost control.
Even men who hated him understood one thing.
Victor Blackwood was most dangerous when he became quiet.
Serena tried to smile.
“Victor.”
He didn’t answer.
“You’re home early.”
Victor looked down at Ethan’s arm.
Something changed in his eyes.
“Lily.”
She swallowed.
“Yes?”
“Pick up my son.”
Lily crawled toward Ethan.
Serena stepped forward.
“Victor, there’s been a misunderstanding.”
Victor raised one finger.
Serena stopped.
Lily gently lifted Ethan.
The baby immediately buried his face against her chest.
His entire body shook.
Victor watched.
His jaw tightened.
Then Ethan heard his father’s voice.
“Hey, little man.”
The baby turned.
He reached toward Victor with his uninjured arm.
Victor’s expression cracked for half a second.
He took his son carefully.
Ethan began sobbing against his father’s shoulder.
Victor closed his eyes.
Then he looked at Serena.
“What happened?”
Serena answered immediately.
“The nanny lost her temper.”
Lily stared at her.
“What?”
“She grabbed Ethan too hard.”
“You were dragging him!”
Serena turned toward Victor.
“She’s been unstable for weeks.”
“That’s a lie!”
“Enough.”
Victor’s voice silenced both women.
He looked at Lily.
“Can you prove what you just said?”
Lily hesitated.
Serena noticed.
And suddenly smiled.
Victor noticed that too.
Lily slowly reached into the pocket of her uniform.
Her phone wasn’t there.
Her stomach dropped.
She searched the other pocket.
Empty.
Serena’s smile grew.
Looking directly at Lily, she whispered,
“Lose something?”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
Then a voice came from the staircase.
“Mr. Blackwood?”
Everyone looked up.
It was Rosa, the housekeeper.
She was trembling.
May you like
And in her hand was Lily’s missing phone.
“I think,” Rosa said, “you need to see what your fiancée tried to make me destroy.”
