CHAPTER 5: THE LIE THAT BUILT AN EMPIRE

For fifteen years, Marcus Thorne believed he knew the truth about his father’s death.

A tragic accident.

A rainy night.

A moment of bad luck that took away the man who built the foundation of the Thorne empire.

That was the story everyone told him.

The story written in newspapers.

The story repeated by lawyers.

The story his family accepted.

But now, standing inside his wife’s hospital room, Marcus realized something terrifying.

Everyone had been protecting a lie.

He stared at Victor.

His uncle.

The man who had raised him after his father died.

The man who had always told him to be strong.

The man who had always said:

“Some truths are better left buried.”

Marcus’s voice became cold.

“What happened that night?”

Victor didn’t answer.

And that silence was the answer Marcus feared most.

“Uncle Victor.”

His voice became louder.

“I asked you a question.”

Khloe watched carefully.

She had never seen Marcus like this.

Not angry.

Not emotional.

Betrayed.

Victor slowly sat down.

For a few seconds, he looked like a man carrying a weight too heavy to hold anymore.

“Your father didn’t die because of an accident.”

The words changed the entire room.

Marcus froze.

“What?”

Victor looked down.

“The brakes on his car were cut.”

Silence.

Khloe covered her mouth.

Marcus stared at him.

“No.”

His voice was barely a whisper.

“No, that’s impossible.”

Victor looked at him.

“I wish it was.”

Marcus stepped backward.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because you were nineteen years old.”

“I was old enough to know!”

“You were angry. Hurt. Destroyed.”

Victor’s voice cracked.

“You wanted revenge. You wanted someone to blame.”

Marcus clenched his fists.

“So you lied to me?”

“I protected you.”

“No.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You protected yourself.”

The accusation hit hard.

Victor looked away.

Because part of him knew Marcus was right.

Across town, Isabella Rossi sat inside a dark office.

She had changed clothes.

Removed her jewelry.

Washed away her perfect makeup.

But nothing could remove the fear in her eyes.

The man from the parking garage had disappeared.

But his warning remained.

The original recording.

She knew exactly what he had.

And she knew exactly what it could do.

Her entire life was built on one carefully created illusion.

One lie.

One decision.

One night.

If that truth came out…

Everything would collapse.

Her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

The name made her hesitate.

Then she answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice responded.

“Are you losing control?”

Isabella’s jaw tightened.

“I handled the situation.”

“No.”

The voice became sharper.

“You made a mistake.”

“I didn’t know there were cameras.”

“That’s your problem.”

A pause.

“You were supposed to destroy Khloe’s reputation.”

“I can still fix it.”

The man laughed.

“No.”

His voice lowered.

“You don’t understand what happened tonight.”

Isabella stayed silent.

“The Thorne family is awake now.”

Her expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Marcus is looking deeper.”

A pause.

“And if he finds out everything…”

The man didn’t finish.

He didn’t need to.

Isabella already knew.

Back at the hospital, Marcus walked to the window.

The city lights reflected in the glass.

Millions of people lived below.

Millions of lives.

But his world had changed in one night.

His wife had almost lost their baby.

A woman he trusted had attacked her.

And now his father’s death was no longer what he believed.

Khloe slowly reached for his hand.

“Marcus.”

He turned.

“I’m sorry.”

She shook her head.

“Don’t apologize.”

“How can I not?”

“Because right now, we need the truth.”

Marcus looked at her.

Not his company.

Not his money.

Not his reputation.

Her.

Their baby.

Their family.

“You’re right.”

He squeezed her hand.

“I’m done letting other people control my life.”

Victor stood quietly.

“Then you need to know everything.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Tell me.”

Victor took a deep breath.

“The night your father died, he wasn’t just investigating a business problem.”

“What was he investigating?”

Victor hesitated.

“A betrayal inside the family.”

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Who?”

Victor looked toward the door.

Then back at Marcus.

“Someone close.”

The room became silent.

“Someone who knew everything about your father.”

Marcus’s expression hardened.

“Who?”

Victor didn’t answer.

Instead, he placed an old photograph on the table.

Marcus picked it up.

His breathing stopped.

Because standing beside his father in the picture…

Was Isabella Rossi.

Khloe looked shocked.

“Isabella?”

Victor nodded.

“She wasn’t just someone who appeared years later.”

Marcus stared at the photograph.

“How did she know my father?”

Victor’s face became serious.

“That is the question you need to answer.”

Later that night, Marcus returned to the private security office of the hospital.

He needed the footage.

Not just from Khloe’s room.

Everything.

Every camera.

Every person who entered.

The security director handed him a file.

“Mr. Thorne, there’s something else.”

Marcus looked up.

“What?”

“The cameras caught someone entering the hospital before Miss Rossi.”

“Who?”

The director hesitated.

“A man.”

“Do we know who?”

He pressed a button.

The footage appeared.

A man walking through the hospital lobby.

Marcus stared at the screen.

His face slowly changed.

Because he recognized him.

The man from his childhood.

The man who had disappeared after his father’s death.

The man everyone thought was gone forever.

Marcus whispered:

“No…”

The security director looked confused.

“You know him?”

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because he knew exactly what this meant.

The past was coming back.

And this time…

Nobody could hide it.

Then another piece of footage appeared.

A timestamp.

Three hours before the attack.

The man met Isabella Rossi.

Inside the hospital.

Marcus watched the screen.

His stomach tightened.

Because Isabella wasn’t acting alone.

She had help.

May you like

And the person helping her knew secrets powerful enough to destroy the entire Thorne family.
