CHAPTER 1 — The Truth Behind the Accident

The emergency room doors slammed shut.

For the first time in his life, Daniel stood completely helpless.

The woman he loved was fighting for her life behind those doors.

And his unborn child…

His only child…

Was fighting beside her.

The hospital hallway was silent except for the sound of machines, hurried footsteps, and the faint beeping coming from inside the emergency room.

Daniel stood against the wall, his hands still stained with his wife’s blood.

He couldn’t forget the moment he found her.

Her body lying motionless at the bottom of the stairs.

Her dress torn.

Her eyes closed.

And his mother standing there pretending she had no idea what happened.

A nurse suddenly rushed out.

“Mr. Carter?”

Daniel immediately turned.

“Yes?”

The nurse hesitated.

“We need you to prepare yourself. Your wife lost a lot of blood.”

Daniel’s face went pale.

“But the baby?”

The nurse looked down.

“We’re doing everything we can.”

Those words broke something inside him.

Behind him, his mother, Evelyn, began crying.

“Oh my God… I never wanted this.”

Daniel slowly turned.

For years, he had believed his mother was strict.

Difficult.

Controlling.

But still a mother who loved him.

Now he wasn’t sure who she was anymore.

“You said it was an accident.”

Evelyn nodded quickly.

“It was. I swear.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Then why did you try to put her back in the car?”

Her face froze.

“I… I was scared.”

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“You weren’t scared for her.”

Silence filled the hallway.

“You were scared because you knew someone would find out.”

Evelyn looked away.

That small movement told Daniel everything.

Before he could say anything else, a police officer entered the hallway.

“Mr. Carter?”

Daniel looked over.

“We received a call about an incident at your home.”

The officer looked at Evelyn.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to ask you a few questions.”

Evelyn’s expression changed.

“Questions?”

The officer nodded.

“The hospital security team also recovered footage from your home’s hallway camera.”

The air disappeared from Evelyn’s lungs.

Daniel saw it.

The fear.

The realization.

She knew.

She knew the truth was coming.
