SHE SLAPPED THE WRONG WOMAN / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Signed

They opened the lunchbox in Nora’s office.

Inside were a flash drive, three folded maintenance reports, and a business card.

LENA ORTIZ — FLEET SAFETY.

Abigail sat down before her knees could give out.

For five months, she had imagined Daniel’s last morning as ordinary.

Coffee.

Boots by the door.

A quick kiss while she complained about the smell of eggs.

Now every detail felt like something she should have understood.

“He knew something was wrong.”

Nora shook her head.

“He left information. That doesn’t mean he knew he would die.”

Abigail looked at the handwriting on the note.

It didn’t help.

An investigator working with Nora arranged to preserve the drive before anyone opened its contents.

The reports showed repeated problems with braking systems on trucks assigned to a Sinclair distribution route.

Daniel’s initials appeared beside one inspection.

In the margin, he had written:

Removed from service. Do not dispatch.

A later sheet listed the same truck as cleared.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Lena Ortiz.

Abigail called the number on the card.

Disconnected.

Nora found a current number through professional records and left a message.

No answer.

At seven that evening, Abigail moved into a small guest apartment at one of Matteo’s hotels. There was a kitchen, a washing machine, and a lock nobody else was supposed to open without knocking.

She stood in the doorway.

“I can’t pay for this.”

“You can decide later whether it’s a loan,” Matteo said.

“I don’t want to owe you my life.”

“You don’t.”

He stepped back.

“Good night, Abigail.”

That night, she washed Daniel’s lunchbox in the sink, leaving the taped note untouched.

At 11:42, Nora called.

“Lena contacted me.”

Abigail gripped the counter.

“Will she talk?”

“She wants to meet somewhere public. Tomorrow morning.”

“What did she say?”

Nora hesitated.

“Tell me.”

“She said she didn’t clear Daniel’s truck.”

Abigail closed her eyes.

“Then who signed it?”

“She says someone copied her signature.”

Outside the apartment, an elevator chimed.

A moment later, something slid beneath the door.

No footsteps lingered.

Abigail called Owen before she moved.

He arrived and opened the envelope himself.

Inside was a photograph of Abigail entering the hospital.

On the back, somebody had written:

Think about the baby.
