SHE SLAPPED THE WRONG WOMAN / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Voice on the Drive

The flash drive held more than maintenance reports.

The first review had revealed spreadsheets and scanned forms.

The investigator’s later report identified a small audio folder Abigail hadn’t known existed.

Nora called her before opening it.

“It may be difficult.”

“Play it.”

Daniel’s voice filled the conference room.

Tired.

Annoyed.

Alive.

Abigail gripped the edge of the table.

This is Daniel Foster. I’m making a record of the truck they’ve assigned me after I reported it out of service.

A door slammed in the background.

Another man spoke.

We replaced the line. It’s cleared.

Daniel answered.

Then give me the repair sheet.

Dispatch has it.

I’m not losing my license over your schedule.

A pause.

The second voice lowered.

You’ve got a baby coming, right? You want another unpaid week?

Abigail bent forward.

Isabella put a hand between her shoulders.

On the recording, Daniel took a breath.

I want a safe truck.

The file ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Abigail sat up.

“He believed them.”

Nora nodded.

“They told him it was repaired.”

“He wasn’t careless.”

“No.”

Abigail cried then, with an anger that made it hard to breathe.

Not because she had doubted Daniel completely.

Because she had doubted him at all.

In her worst moments, alone with bills and an empty side of the bed, she had whispered, Why didn’t you slow down?

Now she wanted those words back.

Nora waited until Abigail could speak.

Then she explained the plan.

The evidence would go to the investigators already reviewing Daniel’s death. A lawyer would request that relevant records be preserved. Abigail’s civil claim could proceed separately.

None of it would happen overnight.

None of it guaranteed an easy result.

“I don’t need easy,” Abigail said. “I need it to count.”

That afternoon, an independent reporter reviewed the ballroom video and supporting records with permission from the people who supplied them.

Nora kept the criminal investigation’s sensitive material out of the release.

The story went live at six.

The full slap.

Richard’s instruction to the manager.

The false account pushed by Sinclair’s representatives.

By seven, the company postponed its shareholder announcement.

By eight, two board members demanded an independent review.

At 8:14, Richard called Abigail.

She let Nora listen.

“You have no idea what you’re doing,” he said.

May you like

Abigail looked at Daniel’s lunchbox.

“For the first time,” she answered, “I think I do.”
