Chapter 13 - THE LAST WHITMORE LIE

Charles fell first.

The police sniper’s bullet struck his shoulder.

Eleanor’s shot hit the wooden pier.

She had missed.

Or chosen to.

Officers rushed forward.

Charles was arrested.

Alive.

Emily ran back inside.

Daniel knelt beside Rachel.

Blood covered his hands.

“She’s breathing!”

Paramedics took over.

Daniel rode with Rachel to the hospital.

Emily stayed with Eleanor.

For the first time, Eleanor looked small.

“He was my father.”

Emily said nothing.

“I spent my life trying to earn approval from a man who destroyed everyone around him.”

Emily looked at her.

“And you became like him.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Emily expected an excuse.

None came.

Eleanor whispered, “I became like him.”

At the hospital, Rachel survived surgery.

The bullet missed her heart.

Victor finally began talking when he learned Charles had been arrested.

He handed prosecutors everything.

Bank records.

Bribery ledgers.

Fake medical reports.

Thomas’s murder file.

The payments to Harbor House.

But one question remained.

Why had Charles wanted Emily gone?

The answer came from Eleanor’s mother’s hidden records.

Emily sat with Daniel beside Rachel’s hospital bed as an investigator explained it.

“Your grandmother created a trust before you were born.”

Emily frowned.

“For me?”

“Yes.”

Daniel asked, “How much?”

“Controlling interest in Whitmore Holdings.”

Eleanor stared.

“My mother left the company to Madeline?”

The investigator nodded.

“She didn’t trust Richard or Charles.”

Emily slowly understood.

“So if I disappeared…”

“Charles retained control.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“All of this for money.”

Rachel shook her head.

“Power.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Men like Charles don’t care about money after a certain point.”

She looked at Daniel.

“They care that no one can tell them no.”

Daniel took her hand.

For the first time, Rachel smiled at him.

Then Emily asked the question she had been avoiding.

“What happens now?”

The investigator looked at her.

“Legally?”

“Yes.”

“You are Madeline Eleanor Whitmore.”

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

“Your DNA test confirms it.”

“I mean the name.”

She looked at Eleanor.

“I’m Emily Carter.”

Eleanor swallowed.

“Grace gave you that name.”

“Yes.”

“She raised you.”

“Yes.”

Eleanor nodded slowly.

“Then keep it.”

Emily was surprised.

Eleanor continued.

“She was your mother when I wasn’t.”

Emily’s eyes filled.

It was the first thing Eleanor had said that didn’t feel selfish.

Daniel squeezed Emily’s hand.

Then the investigator placed another envelope on the table.

“This was found in Charles’s safe.”

Emily opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Grace Carter.

Margaret.

And Eleanor.

Taken twenty-five years earlier.

Emily stared.

“You knew Grace.”

Eleanor’s face changed.

Margaret whispered, “Oh no.”

Emily looked at Eleanor.

“You knew the woman who raised me?”

Eleanor began crying.

Emily stood.

“How?”

Eleanor whispered, “Because I met her once.”

“When?”

“Three days after you disappeared.”

Emily felt the room tilt.

“Why?”

May you like

Eleanor looked at the floor.

“Because Margaret tried to give you back.”
