Chapter 11 - THE LIE THAT POISONED EVERYTHING

Eleanor had believed Rachel stole Emily.
That was the lie that shaped twenty-five years of hate.
Richard told Eleanor that Rachel kidnapped Madeline as revenge.
He showed her forged police evidence.
A witness statement.
A bloodstained blanket.
A photograph of Rachel near the hospital.
Eleanor believed him.
“So you paid to keep her locked up?” Emily asked.
Eleanor nodded.
“I thought she murdered you.”
Daniel looked disgusted.
“You never spoke to her?”
“I couldn’t.”
“Because hearing her side might have ruined the story you wanted to believe?”
Eleanor looked at him.
“You’re right.”
The admission surprised everyone.
She continued.
“I was weak.”
Margaret crossed her arms.
“You were cruel.”
“Yes.”
Eleanor looked at Emily.
“And yesterday I was cruel again.”
Emily didn’t respond.
Eleanor stepped closer.
“I don’t expect forgiveness.”
“Good.”
“But I will help fix this.”
Daniel said, “Start with the money.”
Eleanor nodded.
“The Harbor House trust was managed by Victor.”
Margaret frowned.
“But Victor was arrested.”
“Richard wasn’t the only person who could access it.”
“Who else?”
Eleanor hesitated.
“My father.”
Margaret stared.
“Dad?”
Their father, Charles Whitmore, had supposedly died twelve years earlier.
Eleanor whispered, “He knew about Richard’s crimes.”
Emily said, “Your mother hid evidence in my pendant.”
“Yes.”
“Did your father know?”
Eleanor looked sick.
“I think he did.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
Blocked number.
He answered.
Rachel’s voice came through.
“Daniel?”
He stood.
“Mom?”
Her breathing was shaky.
“I’m okay.”
“Where are you?”
A male voice replaced hers.
“Pier 17.”
Daniel froze.
The voice was old.
Measured.
Familiar to Eleanor.
Her face turned white.
“Dad.”
Everyone stared at her.
The man laughed softly through the phone.
“Hello, Eleanor.”
Margaret gripped the table.
“No.”
Charles Whitmore was alive.
He continued.
“Bring Madeline and the pendant.”
Emily said, “Why me?”
“Because your grandmother made you the key to everything.”
Daniel grabbed the phone.
“If you hurt Rachel—”
“You were always dramatic.”
Daniel froze.
Charles laughed.
“You get that from Thomas.”
Then the call ended.
Margaret stared at Eleanor.
“You knew Dad was alive?”
Eleanor shook her head.
“No.”
Emily looked at the pendant.
“What happens if he gets this?”
Eleanor whispered, “He gets access to the account.”
Daniel frowned.
“How much?”
Margaret answered before her.
“Hundreds of millions.”
Emily looked up.
But Eleanor shook her head.
“It isn’t about the money.”
“What is it about?”
Eleanor stared at the jade.
“My mother kept records.”
“Of what?”
Eleanor’s voice dropped.
“Every crime the Whitmore men committed for thirty years.”
Daniel understood.
“The pendant leads to the evidence.”
Eleanor nodded.
“And if Charles gets it…”
May you like
Margaret finished.
“He can destroy the last proof against him.”
