CHAPTER 2: THE EVIDENCE MARGARET NEVER EXPECTED

The nursery fell into a suffocating silence.

Margaret stared at Ethan as though she no longer recognized the man standing before her.

"Ethan..." she said, forcing a smile. "You're misunderstanding what happened."

"I saw enough."

"No, you didn't."

Emma slowly stood, one hand against her aching scalp while the other reached for her crying daughter. She lifted the baby from the crib and gently rocked her, fighting back tears.

Margaret pointed at Emma.

"She's manipulating you."

Ethan didn't even look at his mother.

He was staring at the red handprint spreading across Emma's cheek.

His fists slowly clenched.

"Who did this?"

Margaret folded her arms.

"I disciplined her."

Ethan looked up.

His eyes had never been so cold.

"You hit my wife."

"She disrespected me."

"You pulled her hair."

"She deserved—"

"Enough."

The single word cut through the room like a knife.

For the first time in years, Margaret stopped talking.

Ethan gently brushed a strand of hair away from Emma's face.

"Are you hurt anywhere else?"

Emma hesitated.

"I... I'm okay."

He looked at her torn sleeve and the bruises already forming on her wrist.

"No," he said quietly. "You're not."

Then Ethan noticed something.

A tiny black camera mounted above the nursery bookshelf.

The security camera.

His eyes narrowed.

He remembered installing it two weeks before the baby was born so he could check on his daughter while traveling.

It had recorded everything.

Margaret suddenly noticed where he was looking.

Her face drained of color.

"Ethan..."

He took out his phone.

"Don't."

She stepped forward.

"You don't need to watch it."

"I do."

Within seconds, the footage appeared on his screen.

The room was silent except for the baby's soft cries.

The video showed Margaret entering the nursery.

The accusation.

The slap.

The violent pull on Emma's hair.

The fall.

Every second.

There was no argument left.

Only proof.

Margaret slowly backed away.

"Ethan... I lost my temper."

He locked his phone.

"No."

"You assaulted my wife."

"And you terrified my daughter."

Then he made a decision that shocked everyone.

"Pack your things."

Margaret blinked.

"What?"

"You have one hour."

May you like

"Ethan..."

"You are no longer welcome in my home."
