She Pulled Her Daughter-in-Law's Hair Beside a Sleeping Baby—Then Her Son Walked Through the Door

CHAPTER 1: THE SCREAM FROM THE NURSERY

The baby had finally fallen asleep.

After hours of feeding, rocking, and pacing across the nursery, Emma Walker carefully lowered her newborn daughter into the crib. Her arms ached. Her eyes burned from exhaustion.

She let out a slow breath.

Finally.

Silence.

Emma brushed a fingertip across the baby's tiny cheek.

"Please stay asleep," she whispered.

The nursery door creaked open.

Margaret Walker stepped inside without knocking.

Emma's shoulders immediately stiffened.

"She's sleeping," Emma said quietly.

Margaret didn't answer.

She stood beside the crib, studying the baby's face with a cold, critical stare.

After a long silence, she spoke.

"She doesn't look like a Walker."

Emma froze.

"What did you say?"

Margaret didn't take her eyes off the baby.

"She doesn't resemble my son."

Emma felt her stomach knot.

It wasn't the first time.

For weeks, Margaret had dropped poisonous little comments, hinting that the baby wasn't Ethan's.

"Margaret," Emma said, struggling to stay calm. "Please stop."

Margaret slowly turned toward her.

"Stop what?"

"This."

"The truth?"

Emma stared at her in disbelief.

"I love Ethan."

Margaret gave a humorless laugh.

"You love his money."

Emma's jaw tightened.

When she and Ethan first met, he hadn't been wealthy. They had built their life together long before his business succeeded.

But facts no longer mattered to Margaret.

"I'm not doing this with you," Emma said, turning back toward the crib.

That was the moment everything changed.

Margaret lunged forward and grabbed Emma's arm.

Emma gasped.

"Don't you dare turn your back on me."

"Let go."

Instead, Margaret tightened her grip.

"You're not walking away."

Emma tried to pull free.

"You're hurting me."

The slap came without warning.

CRACK.

Margaret's palm slammed across Emma's face so hard her head whipped sideways.

She staggered backward, dizzy.

Before she could regain her balance, Margaret seized a fistful of her hair.

Emma screamed.

Margaret yanked with all her strength.

Emma crashed onto the hardwood floor beside the crib.

The impact rattled through the nursery.

The baby jerked awake.

A heartbeat later—

She began screaming.

Loud.

Panicked.

Terrified.

Emma struggled to push herself up, one hand protecting her head.

"Margaret... please..."

But Margaret wasn't finished.

She stood over her daughter-in-law, breathing hard, her face twisted with fury.

"You'll never belong in this family."

Emma looked toward the crib, desperate to reach her crying daughter.

Margaret blocked her path.

Then—

The nursery door flew open.

"Ethan—"

Margaret's voice caught in her throat.

Ethan Walker stood in the doorway.

He took in the entire scene in one devastating glance.

His wife was lying on the floor.

His newborn daughter was crying uncontrollably.

His mother was standing over them.

For a single second...

The room fell silent.

Then something inside him broke.

Without saying a word, Ethan crossed the room in three long strides.

He grabbed his mother's wrist.

Pulled her away from Emma.

Then stepped between them.

His body became a wall.

A shield.

His voice exploded through the nursery.

"DON'T YOU EVER TOUCH MY WIFE AGAIN!"

The words echoed off the walls.

Margaret stared at him in stunned silence.

She had spent her entire life believing she controlled her son.

For the first time...

She saw something in Ethan's eyes she had never seen before.

Not hesitation.

Not guilt.

Not obedience.

Only rage.

And for the first time in years—

May you like

Margaret Walker was afraid of her own son.
